Mark Your Calendars: ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ Lands on Netflix March 17, 2025!

Last year saw the signing of a deal between streaming giant Netflix and television production company AMC, with the aim of bringing some of AMC’s top shows to Netflix’s global platform. This partnership has since proved mutually advantageous for both parties. Shows like “Dark Winds,” “A Discovery of Witches,” and “The Walking Dead” have once again risen as streaming sensations on Netflix, reappearing in the Top 10 charts even after their initial premieres. However, there was a show initially scheduled to debut on Netflix last month that is now set for release in March: namely, “The Walking Dead: Dead City.

Starting March 17, 2025, the series Dead City will commence streaming on Netflix, marking its debut there. Neither AMC nor Netflix have provided comments regarding this change in programming, but it’s clear why this switch occurred. The second season of The Walking Dead: Dead City is anticipated to launch either in April or May, offering an excellent opportunity for those eager to catch up on Season 1, who might choose to subscribe to AMC+ to watch Season 2 afterwards. This very same pattern occurred with The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, which garnered popularity as a streaming hit on Netflix prior to the release of its second season last year, leading many to sign up for AMC – further confirming that the “Netflix Effect” indeed exists in reality.

Titled “Dead City“, this new series brings together Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Maggie and Negan, two beloved characters from the Walking Dead universe who were once fierce adversaries. Set in a post-apocalyptic New York City, they embark on a quest to find Maggie’s lost son, Hershel. Their journey is fraught with encounters against Walkers, marauders, and various villains, including The Croat (Željko Ivanek) and The Dama (Lisa Emery). Critics and fans alike have generally praised the series, with it currently holding a score of 79% on Rotten Tomatoes.

‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ Season 2 Features An All-New Bad Guy

So far, “The Walking Dead” has provided fans with some truly tantalizing villains in a zombie-infested world. Characters like The Governor, Alpha, and even Negan are standouts, but the upcoming Season 2 of “Dead City” promises to introduce us to one of the most sinister antagonists yet: Bruegel, played by talented character actor Kim Coates (known for his roles in “Sons of Anarchy” and “American Primeval”).

The latest villain’s role within the overall plot isn’t clear yet, but during an interview with MovieWeb earlier this year, Coates described him as both “humorous and ruthless.” Furthermore, Coates stated that Bruegel is a character he hasn’t played before, which carries significant weight considering Coates has portrayed many of our most unbalanced favorites over the years, including Tig Trager from Sons of Anarchy. “He’s a dink,” Coates added, further mentioning:

He’s not a good person, but he’s extremely intelligent and wealthy. During the zombie apocalypse in Manhattan, he resided in an exclusive neighborhood. When he emerged, Manhattan was overrun with zombies. He gathered his own group of survivors. In Season 2, there are several such groups, and I, named Bruegel, am one of the most prominent members of my gang. I’ve killed numerous zombies.

I’m eagerly awaiting the premiere of “The Walking Dead: Dead City” Season 2, which is scheduled for later this year on AMC. If you haven’t seen it yet, don’t forget to catch up with Season 1 when it becomes available on Netflix on March 17. You can also watch our chat with Coates, where he delves into his new villain role and shares insights about his time working on the Netflix hits “American Primeval” and “Sons of Anarchy”. The interview is posted above for your convenience.
