On Tuesday, I, as Kevin Spacey, firmly refute any claims suggesting I targeted Guy Pearce during our work together on the 1997 film “L.A. Confidential”. I remember expressing to him, “Grow up,” and stating that “you are not a victim.” This was not an act of targeting or harassment, but rather a professional exchange between colleagues.
Spacey’s response surfaced a day after Pearce claimed on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast that Spacey deliberately targeted him during the filming of L.A. Confidential. He also mentioned that he had told his spouse at the time that he felt secure only on set when co-star Simon Baker was present, as Spacey tended to focus on Baker rather than him.
Or, in a more conversational tone:
A day after Pearce spoke out on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, Spacey admitted that he targeted Pearce while they were working together on L.A. Confidential. He also shared that he felt safe only when co-star Simon Baker was around because Spacey paid more attention to Baker instead of him.
Pearce found the 2017 #MeToo movement, where numerous accusations of sexual misconduct were made against Spacey and other well-known figures in Hollywood, to be a truly eye-opening reminder.
Pearce stated that he was in London working when he received the news, which left him devastated and inconsolable. It was then that the full extent of what had happened truly hit him – how he had initially underestimated it, perhaps choosing to ignore or forget about it.
Pearce explained to THR that he felt hesitant to label himself as a victim, even though there might have been elements of it. However, he made it clear that he was far from being a victim in the extreme way others have been at the hands of sexual predators.
THR reached out to Spacey’s reps on Monday, but the actor responded publicly on X Tuesday.
Spacey mentioned that he had worked with Pearce in the past. If something he did back then caused any discomfort for Pearce, he could have directly communicated about it. Instead, Pearce chose to talk to the media, which are now inquiring about him due to their interest in his comments. So, if you genuinely want to know my response, here it is: Mature up.
I’ll spin it like this: A year following our work on L.A. Confidential, Pearce hopped over to Georgia, claiming he came especially to hang out with me during the filming of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.
Did you also share this information with the media, or was it not part of the story you’re telling about being a victim? You never made it clear that you didn’t want to spend time with me. There might have been another reason, but it doesn’t seem logical that you would lead me on for no apparent reason. Now, 28 years later, you’ve decided to confront the issue after I’ve faced numerous challenges.
THR reached out to Pearce’s reps for any further comment on Spacey’s response.
Hey there! Spacey here. If you’re game for a chat, count me in! Anytime, anywhere suits me fine. Fancy doing it right here on X? No worries about that. I’ve got nothing to conceal. But buddy, it’s high time you matured up a bit. Stop seeing yourself as a victim.
