Just as iconic ’80s films significantly shaped popular culture for years to come, so too did the infamous group known as the Brat Pack rise to fame and influence. The label gained traction and had profound effects on the lives of each young star it encompassed in unique ways (Ally Sheedy is still taken aback by her Brat Pack affiliation). Among them was Molly Ringwald, one of the most recognized females, who spoke about their unexpected notoriety during a reunion event for the film The Breakfast Club.
At Orlando MegaCon, during a panel for a “Breakfast Club” reunion (as reported by People), Ringwald expressed her thoughts on the ’80s moniker associated with the group. She revealed that a journalist originated the term, and it significantly impacted all their young acting careers. Additionally, she mentioned that in her opinion, it diminished the unique contributions the group of peers were making at the time.
The performance was inspired by the Rat Pack, a well-known group consisting of figures like Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr., a term that originated from an article in New York Magazine. Over time, many of us found ourselves under this common label. Personally, I believe it somewhat overshadowed the effort we were putting into our work.
It’s understandable that the up-and-coming celebrities didn’t let the label “rising stars” go to waste, as the power of words can be greater than a sword when skillfully used. The term “Brat Pack,” a play on words inspired by an influential American group of artists, was popularized by New York Magazine, which significantly impacted their reputations (whether they agreed with it or not). David Blum, the author, didn’t mean any harm with the phrase “Brat Pack,” but others may have interpreted it differently. It’s unfortunate that this label emerged early in their careers and left a lasting impression, potentially limiting and reducing their public image due to the ongoing influence of the term.
Last year, I found myself delving deeper into the fascinating tale that unfolded in the Hulu subscription documentary titled “Brats“. This captivating film took me on a journey back to the roots of the 1985 Blum article and the profound impact it had on the lives of those involved. The movie also shed light on some widely held misconceptions about the Brat Pack, revealing the story behind the term’s tumultuous origin.
WANT TO READ MORE ABOUT THE BRAT PACK?

As a die-hard fan of the original Brat Pack crew, I can hardly contain my excitement about the possibility of a St. Elmo’s Fire sequel featuring our beloved cast! Hulu’s documentary on the iconic group has not only rekindled the nostalgia but also made the unthinkable become a reality.
Over time, and as the members of the Brat Pack reflect on life following the 1985 article, some are working to organize a reunion. Being a fan of iconic films like _St. Elmo’s Fire_, _Breakfast Club_, and _Pretty in Pink_ (and many others), I can’t help but eagerly anticipate a collaboration from these influential actors. It appears that they have grown comfortable with their past, and if Andrew McCarthy’s recent change of heart about _Pretty in Pink_ is any indication, my expectations are fairly optimistic.
I hope Molly Ringwald and the Brat Pack will navigate whatever comes next, managing to transcend old emotions while understanding that their significance is on par with the Rat Pack.
