The competition among the potential 2025 Oscar winners for the gold statuette has started and it’s proving to be quite a thrilling ride. Although Netflix’s film Emilia Pérez appeared to have an edge after winning at The Golden Globes, the movie’s controversy could potentially influence voters’ decisions, with Anora seizing the opportunity, garnering several accolades including the Critics Choice Award for Best Picture. However, the race for Best Picture is incredibly close, but an even more intriguing development is unfolding in the Best Animated Film category, where no obvious frontrunner has yet emerged.
Prior to the Oscars, numerous award ceremonies take place which often offer clues about who might win the prestigious awards. For animated films, in particular, the Golden Globes can be significant indicators. However, Academy voters frequently align their choices with the winners of BAFTAs, Critics Choice Awards, Producers Guild Awards, and Annie Awards – the major animation-focused prize.
In terms of major awards during the 2020s, there appears to be a pattern where the winners are aligning more often than not. For instance, in 2020 and 2022, all six prestigious competitions concurred on Pixar’s “Soul” and Guillermo del Toro’s “Pinocchio” as their top picks. In 2021, Disney’s “Encanto” was the exception, sweeping four out of the six awards, including the Golden Globe and the Oscar. However, in 2023, we saw a rare disagreement with two films, “The Boy and the Heron” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” vying for top honors. “The Boy and the Heron” was successful in winning the Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA, while “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” took home the Critics Choice, PGA, and Annie Awards.
This year’s Oscar competition appears to be much less predictable compared to last year when only two movies were in contention for the title.
The Latvian film “Flow,” which may not appeal to all families, won a Golden Globe in January, but it hasn’t fared well in other competitions. On the other hand, Dreamworks’ “The Wild Robot” has been sweeping awards this year, taking home the Critics Choice, PGA, and Annie Awards. However, just like “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” last year, it hasn’t yet claimed the prestigious award.
The BAFTAs have further complicated matters by bestowing their premier award to “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl“, a decision that has left some perplexed within the voting panel.
Only three films are currently taking top honors in this category, but others also deserve recognition, such as the R-rated stop-motion film “Memoir of a Snail” and the highly anticipated sequel to Disney/Pixar’s previous success, “Inside Out 2.” Notably, the original “Inside Out” won all six major awards in 2015.
The category has been the most unpredictable since 2019, when Pixar’s Toy Story 4 claimed the Golden Statue, leaving animation enthusiasts guessing who will emerge as the winner. While I have a soft spot for Anxiety in Inside Out 2, my hope lies with the heart-wrenching and poignant film, The Wild Robot.
All in all, this year’s contest is intense and no single competitor stands out as the favorite. Consequently, this intriguing competition is undoubtedly the one that will capture my keenest interest as we approach the Oscars.
The great news is that the wait for the 97th Academy Awards is nearly over! You can catch all the action live this coming Sunday, March 2nd. For the first time, you can stream it online with an active Hulu subscription, or if you prefer, watch it on ABC to see who will be awarded the coveted gold statuette.
