Keanu Reeves, famously known for his action-packed role as John Wick, is yearning to reprise another beloved character after concluding the John Wick series with 2023’s “John Wick: Chapter 4”. The character he desires to play again is none other than DC’s paranormal investigator, John Constantine. In a nod to the 20th anniversary of his 2005 comic book movie portraying this character, Reeves has spoken about the upcoming sequel to the film.
Over the past few years, I’ve eagerly followed updates about the development of “Constantine 2”. Recently, during a chat on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Keanu Reeves himself shared that discussions regarding the project are underway. He can hardly contain his excitement at the prospect of (hopefully) bringing Constantine back in a way he believes is truly worthy – “definitely in the realm of feeling like the next chapter deserves to be told.
I enjoy nothing more than being around Constantine, having conversations and bouncing ideas off each other. The creativity from Akiva Goldsman and Francis is incredible, and I can’t wait to bring this character to life.
Does ‘Constantine 2’ Have a Place in the DCU?
Introduced in 2005, “Constantine” – a film adapted from the DC comic “Hellblazer” – was directed by Francis Lawrence. This movie comes after “The Matrix” and “John Wick,” starring Keanu Reeves as an ordinary man with a unique ability: he can perceive good and evil spirits coexisting among us. However, this gift is not something he relishes; in fact, his actions have earned him a sentence to spend eternity in Hell. To make amends for his past, Constantine takes on the roles of detective and investigator, delving into the realms of the occult and the supernatural.
Despite receiving a split response initially (46% from critics compared to 72% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes), the DC film has developed a devoted fanbase. A sequel has been in developmental phases for quite some time, with Reeves and director Francis Lawrence likely to return to their roles. However, recent changes within the DC universe – as James Gunn and Peter Safran now lead the revamped DCU – raise questions about the future of Keanu Reeves’ portrayal of Constantine.
According to Director Francis Lawrence, it appears we may be getting a follow-up to the movie “Constantine” sooner rather than later. Known for directing movies such as “I Am Legend” and the “Hunger Games” series, he hinted that “Constantine 2” is now more imminent than ever. He even suggested that this sequel will receive an R rating and will be significantly scarier than its original version.
At long last, we’ve reached a point where we’ve been granted approval to proceed on that path. Keanu, Akiva, and I have been brainstorming together, and let me tell you, the concepts we’ve come up with are truly exceptional – we’re absolutely thrilled about them!
To be straightforward, our initial response to the first film was extremely positive about the creative process. While we weren’t thrilled with receiving an R rating, if we were going to get one, we decided to fully commit. So, let’s go ahead and produce the scarier, R-rated version of a Constantine sequel.
