In the first season of “Yellowstone”, I filmed a scene with NRHA (National Reining Horse Association) riders. While conversing with these men, we delved into the present condition of their industry and potential ways to enhance it. This sparked an idea in me, leading me to plan an event that would highlight and elevate the Western performance genre.

Sheridan Created an Elite Reining Competition

Every season of “The Last Cowboy” showcases a team of skilled reiners as they hone their skills and participate in numerous competitions across the year, leading up to the prestigious tournament known as The Run for a Million. This grand event unfolds annually at the South Point Arena Equestrian Center in Las Vegas, with the victor receiving a $1 million cash prize, of which half goes to the triumphant rider – the largest reward ever seen in reining competition history.

Originally, the contest solely featured reining events. However, it has broadened its scope over time to encompass various activities like cutting (where riders and horses collaborate to isolate cattle from a herd), and even bareback bronco riding. The Run for a Million has evolved into a multi-day spectacle, offering more than just competition viewing, with interviews, live streams, autograph sessions, and performances. Sheridan was thrilled to have Lainey Wilson perform at the event in 2023, a rising country music star whom he had previously cast in a role on Yellowstone.
