Gaming enthusiasts consider Dark Souls as the origin of the “Soulslike” genre, offering a challenging RPG experience on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC platforms. Interestingly, details have emerged suggesting that FromSoftware’s successful game could have been a PlayStation exclusive had Sony made the right moves. Regrettably, this didn’t materialize, leaving us to ponder what gaming landscape we might be experiencing today if it had.
Shuhei Yoshida, who used to be Sony’s president, shared on the Sacred Symbols podcast that Sony had wanted to release Dark Souls, but FromSoftware declined the offer. This is because Sony initially intended to distribute the game’s precursor, Demon’s Souls, but after playing the game and finding it incredibly challenging, they decided against it. Consequently, Atlus and Bandai Namco published Demon’s Souls instead, leaving a significant mark in gaming history.
As a gamer, I’ve always been eagerly awaiting news about the sequel from FromSoftware, but I was disheartened when Sony didn’t show appreciation for their hard work in our previous collaboration. Despite our hopes to rekindle that partnership, they chose to move on instead. This is what Shuhei Yoshida shared with VGC.
Pondering over how different Dark Souls might have been if it had stayed as a PlayStation 3 exclusive, just like Demon’s Souls which, ironically, wasn’t actually published by Sony. Interestingly, Demon’s Souls didn’t create much of a stir initially, but many fans only discovered it after playing Dark Souls, leading to increased curiosity about the precursor game.
If we’re not claiming the game would have flopped on PS3, it’s safe to say it might not have performed as strongly. The sequel being available across multiple consoles allowed more gamers to explore its potential. Although Sony later secured FromSoftware exclusives like Bloodborne and the Demons’ Souls remake, Dark Souls had already laid the groundwork for these successes.
With Sony fans clamoring for a remastered version of Bloodborne, it’s intriguing to ponder how the gaming landscape might have shifted if Dark Souls had remained exclusive to PS3. What about Elden Ring in this scenario? Alas, we can only wonder and speculate about alternative timelines that will forever remain unanswered. Nonetheless, it’s entertaining to imagine the possibilities.
