Just as giant monsters expand their realm within Legendary’s Monsterverse, the upcoming movie in this series has recruited one of 2025’s most sought-after actors. The following film, a sequel to the 2024 release titled “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” is projected for premiere in 2027. At present, details about the movie are scarce, except for some casting announcements. Kaitlyn Dever (who appears in Season 2 of “The Last of Us”) has been confirmed as a lead actress, with Dan Stevens set to reprise his character Traper Beasley from the previous installment of this franchise.
By the set deadline, it’s been announced that has recently been added to the cast of the upcoming Monsterverse film. O’Connell is widely regarded as one of the most undervalued actors currently active, with exceptional performances in UK series such as Skins, This Is England, and the Netflix original western, Godless. His most notable role so far has been in the popular WWII action/drama SAS: Rogue Heroes, based on the formation of the British SAS army regiment.
In the lineup of O’Connell’s significant upcoming ventures, the Monsterverse film stands out as one. This year promises his appearance in a total of two high-profile blockbusters. The first is Danny Boyle’s reimagining titled “28 Years Later“, featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, and Jodie Comer. The second is the original vampire movie, “Sinners“, helmed by Ryan Coogler with Michael B. Jordan in the lead role.
What to Expect from the Next Monsterverse Movie
The Monsterverse by Legendary occupies an unusual position within the film industry. Kicking off in 2014 with Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla, this franchise hasn’t quite reached the critical acclaim some fans anticipated, reaching its highest praise in the Apple TV+ series “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” (93% on Rotten Tomatoes). Each film in the series finds itself in a gray area when it comes to reviews, with Rotten Tomatoes scores varying from 42% at the lowest (Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019) to 76% at the highest (both Godzilla films and Godzilla vs. Kong). Despite receiving mixed reviews, this franchise has been a massive success at the box office, encouraging Legendary to produce more monster-filled movies for eager audiences.
Information about the upcoming Monsterverse movie remains scarce, with its title still unrevealed. The director for this project is Grant Sputore, who replaces Adam Wingard from previous installments like ‘The New Empire’ and ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’. Dave Callaham (‘Shang-Chi’) is penning the script. Although plot specifics are being closely guarded, it’s been hinted that the new film will introduce multiple fresh human characters, such as those portrayed by Dever and O’Connell. Moreover, it seems that Godzilla and Kong will engage in a battle against an impending global catastrophe, escalating the city-obliterating destruction to unprecedented levels.
Supporters anticipate that the fresh characters might bring a burst of energy to the regular characters in the franchise who aren’t giant monsters. Although the series features an exceptional acting team, a common criticism aimed at Legendary’s Monsterverse is the lack of depth in its character development.
