In the upcoming second season of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” Spider-Man will receive significant aid. The next chapter in Marvel’s popular series will bring back beloved character Gwen Stacy, who will be appearing as her superhero persona, Spider-Gwen. The first season of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” has already gained widespread acclaim among critics and viewers, captivating audiences with a fresh perspective on Peter Parker’s origin story. Even before the debut of the series, it was confirmed that there would be a second season, and it seems the creators have grand plans for its continuation.
Jeff Trammell, the showrunner, chief writer, and executive producer of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” announced on Instagram that Season 2 will feature Gwen Stacy, who will make an appearance not just as a character but also as her superhero persona, Spider-Woman, or Spider-Gwen. Trammell shared a sneak peek of Gwen Stacy in her civilian attire and Spider-Gwen costume, which you can view below.
Gwen Stacy, a character designed by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko, made her debut in issue #31 of The Amazing Spider-Man back in December 1965. Her death in the storyline “The Night Gwen Stacy Died” in 1973 significantly shaped Spider-Man and comics as a whole. In 2014, Jason Latour (writer) and Robbi Rodriguez (artist) introduced an alternate universe version of this character who transformed into Spider-Woman in Edge of Spider-Verse #2, published in September that year. Known as Spider-Gwen among fans, this variant of the character quickly became a beloved figure and has since appeared in various adaptations of Spider-Man stories, such as Marvel’s animated series (Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel Rising, Spidey and His Amazing Friends), Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ Hinted at Spider-Gwen in Episode 1
In the primary Marvel Comics universe, it was Peter Parker who caused Gwen Stacy’s death. However, Marvel has revealed that they are bringing her back to life using the Weapon X program, and she will be known as GwenPool in this new incarnation. The character Spider-Gwen, a version of Gwen Stacy from another universe, is one where she was bitten by a spider instead of Peter Parker, resulting in her superhero abilities. Now, it appears that Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man intends to combine these stories and have Gwen Stacy attend school alongside Peter Parker. Rather than meeting an untimely end, she will take on the role of a superhero, teaming up with Spider-Man in her new life.
In the very first episode of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” the groundwork was laid for the emergence of Spider-Gwen alongside Spider-Man. When Peter Parker is bitten by the radioactive spider, it’s hinted that the same spider could have crawled into another student’s backpack, but we don’t learn who that might be. It’s plausible that this unnamed student could get bitten too, and if so, she could develop superhero abilities under a pseudonym like Ghost Spider or Spider-Woman to keep her identity hidden. The Season 1 finale of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” hinted at the introduction of characters such as Venom, Electro, Finesse, and many others from the Marvel universe. Gwen Stacy would be a great fit for the show’s cast.
