Initially, Dune: Awakening was scheduled to premiere prior to Dune: Part Two, however, plans have shifted, and it’s been over a year since Paul Atreides seized the Imperium on the big screen.

Dune: Awakening Release Date

According to the official statement, the movie “Dune: Awakening” will be released in stores on May 20, 2025. You can watch the official announcement trailer right here: [link to the trailer]

As a gamer, I embark on a journey from scrappy survivor to mighty ruler, taking on the formidable might of the Imperium in Dune: Awakening. This isn’t just any survival game – it’s a colossal multiplayer experience set on the vast expanse of Arrakis. I’ll navigate treacherous terrain, evade the monstrous sandworm, construct my own ornithopter, and erect a fortress to establish my dominion. All the while, I share this open world with hundreds of other players, each seeking their own path to power in this epic Dune saga.

Over the last several months, Funcom has been unveiling various aspects of the game piece by piece. However, this latest trailer emphasizes numerous personalization and discovery elements, empowering players to repair their own flying machines, known as ornithopters, and customize their operational bases.

As a devoted fan, I must say that while the films suggest a rather restricted landscape of Arrakis, the game expands this notion dramatically. In an open-world setting, it offers a multitude of intricate locations, including complex bridges and tunnels. Moreover, you’ll encounter numerous settlements teeming with diverse characters from all walks of life.

Is This Canon?

Note that while the narrative unfolds in the universe of Dune, Awakening takes place in an entirely separate timeline. To provide players with a decision-making opportunity about Arrakis’ destiny, the character of Paul Atreides has been omitted; instead, Lady Jessica gives birth to a girl, as per the Bene Gesserit’s original plans.

The task at hand is for the player to decide on the alliances to create on the planet, as well as pick out the houses they wish to partner with.

Absolutely, we’ll eventually introduce the indigenous Fremen characters into the game as well. Initially, Awakening was intended to launch before Dune: Part Two, prompting the developers to keep the Fremen under wraps. However, delays occurred with the sequel, and it was released, even though plans remain unchanged regarding the Fremen’s inclusion.

You can count on it, gamers will have opportunities to engage with the Fremen and their settlements in upcoming content for Awakening.

What’s Incoming for Dune?

The upcoming release of Dune’s next part is eagerly anticipated by fans, as they eagerly await the third installment from director Denis Villeneuve. Since Part Two adapts the first book, Villeneuve is now poised to delve into Paul Atreides’ downfall in Dune: Messiah, marking the conclusion of a trilogy.

Should Villeneuve decide to stop here, there’s talk about proceeding with a fourth film without him, and it’s been hinted that Gareth Edwards, known for directing Rogue One, might be tapped to take over.

In the interim before a new release, those eager to visit Arrakis can immerse themselves in Dune: Awakening as an introduction in the meantime.

Catch Dune: Awakening when it launches for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5 on May 20.
