Marvel Announces Season 2 for ‘Agatha All Along’ and ‘Hawkeye’

As the upcoming series “Daredevil: Born Again” approaches on Disney+, there’s a lot of curiosity about Marvel Television, particularly concerning the future direction and potential revival of existing shows. Some fans have expressed disappointment with the structure of Marvel’s Disney+ series, feeling they were more like movies split into six parts instead of traditional television episodes. This format also left the destinies of characters such as She-Hulk and Moon Knight uncertain, as there was no definite timeline for their return. However, it appears that two Disney+ series, “Agatha All Along” and “Hawkeye,” may be coming back for a second season.

Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s head of streaming, television, and animation, had a chat with Entertainment Weekly about Marvel Television’s future plans. Although series showrunner Jac Schaeffer reportedly declined Marvel’s proposal for Season 2, the studio submitted “Agatha All Along” for Emmy series consideration rather than categorizing it as a miniseries or limited series, suggesting that Marvel may have further ambitions for Agatha Harkness. Winderbaum described this as “linear series potential.” He expressed, “I think it has the potential to be a continuous series. Yes, a second season is definitely something we’d like to do, but let’s not hurry. Let’s come up with the right concept first and then bring it to life.

The series he mentioned besides Hawkeye was Hawkeye. This show premiered during the holiday season in 2021, making it one of the first Marvel series on Disney+. Although Hailee Steinfeld’s character Kate Bishop made a cameo at the end of The Marvels in 2023, it has been quite some time since viewers last saw these characters. Winderbaum mentioned that Hawkeye could potentially have a second season due to its Christmas and Clint and Kate themes, suggesting possible future opportunities for this show. As they plan for the future, the shows will likely be designed to have multiple seasons, follow a pattern, and be released annually.

The Future of Marvel on Disney+

The second season of Agatha All Along follows logically since it wraps up the storyline involving Agatha Harkness helping Billy Maximoff find his twin brother Tommy. Hawkeye’s conclusion seems to hint at Kate Bishop joining the Young Avengers, but that might not be a focus for Marvel right now. However, what Winderman said about future Marvel series on Disney+ suggests more spin-offs could be coming. Shows like She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Ms. Marvel, Echo, and Moon Knight are better suited for TV productions compared to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier or WandaVision, but it’s unclear if their high production costs make them suitable for annual television series.

Marvel Television has decided to postpone three upcoming TV shows in order to concentrate on existing series and characters. This move seems aimed at maintaining a consistent timeline across their annual releases, thereby reducing the wait time for fans eager to see their beloved characters return, which could be as long as 3-4 years without this approach. With “Daredevil: Born Again,” Marvel may revisit and revamp series from the Defenders Saga such as “Jessica Jones” and “Luke Cage.” Additionally, they might explore planned spin-offs that didn’t materialize on Netflix, like “The Daughters of Dragons.” These street-level series could be more budget-friendly for Marvel Television, potentially leading to the reappearance of characters from previous Disney+ shows like Hawkeye, Kate Bishop, Maya Lopez as Echo, and Moon Knight. Here’s hoping Marvel can successfully adapt television storytelling as they did with movies in the 2010s.
