A24 is bringing back two of its top movies – “Moonlight” and “Spring Breakers” – to IMAX theaters, but moviegoers who want to see them will need to act fast as both films are only showing for one night. According to Variety, Barry Jenkins’s drama “Moonlight,” which initially premiered in 2016, is set to return on February 27th as part of the A24 x IMAX Present screening series that highlights A24 classics by presenting them in the large format for the first time. The second film being shown is “Spring Breakers,” a 2013 crime comedy written and directed by Harmony Korine, which will be re-released on March 19th.
Moonlight created quite a stir upon its debut, and it was a flurry of activity during awards season due to this. The highly praised film earned three Oscars, among which was the prestigious Best Picture at the 89th Academy Awards in 2017. The movie portrays three distinct phases of its central character, Chiron: his youth (portrayed by Alex R. Hibbert), his adolescence (Ashton Sanders), and his adulthood (Trevante Rhodes). Viewers get a glimpse into the struggles Chiron faces as a gay African-American man, as well as the abuse he experienced in his formative years.
During Spring Breakers, A24 experienced another financial triumph, earning substantial profits on a minimal budget. The film swiftly gained cult status, captivating audiences with its intense narrative that many consider one of the top spring break movies ever made. The story revolves around four college friends who resort to robbing a restaurant to finance their Florida spring break vacation. However, they find themselves in a dangerous predicament when they encounter a criminal named Alien, portrayed by James Franco, and are subsequently immersed in a vibrant underworld of crime, drugs, and violence illuminated by neon lights.
Older Movie Titles Returning to Theaters Is a Growing Trend
Reviving movie titles post their initial cinema release isn’t a novel concept; anniversary screenings have been quite trendy for years. For instance, the action-packed film John Wick made a comeback to celebrate its 10th anniversary, and the iconic monster Godzilla Minus One roared back onto screens for the King of Monsters’s 70th birthday celebration. Interestingly, this reappearance featured an additional 13 minutes of never-before-seen bonus material.
In recent times, studios have significantly enhanced their approach to re-releasing films and broadened this strategy to encompass titles that don’t necessarily mark special anniversaries. As Variety revealed towards the end of last year, at least 27 classic movies were re-released in 2024 across over 100 U.S. cinemas, with the Lord of the Rings trilogy being one of them, as it made a comeback prior to The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim hitting theaters in December.
A24 is taking advantage of the chance, much like other studios, to present films from its high-quality collection in cinemas again starting March 2024. They kicked off their screening series with the re-release of Alex Garland’s “Ex Machina,” which was timed perfectly with the excitement surrounding his upcoming A24 film, “Civil War.” Some other well-liked titles, such as “Hereditary,” “Midsommar,” “Uncut Gems,” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” are being shown again. However, don’t miss out on “Moonlight” and “Spring Breakers” too!
