Despite continued high interest following the reveal of its multiplayer spinoff, author George R.R. Martin hints that a movie version of his successful video game might be in the works. Known primarily for penning the Song of Ice and Fire novels which eventually became the foundation for HBO’s Game of Thrones series, Martin is also actively engaged in the production of its current spinoff, House of the Dragon.
Martin isn’t limited to just his high fantasy series; he has contributed significantly in both literary and cinematic realms, writing numerous novels and short stories which have been translated into films, such as the upcoming movie “In the Lost Lands” starring Dave Bautista and Milla Jovovich. Moreover, he often provides small updates on the much-anticipated sixth Ice and Fire novel, The Winds of Winter, with the latest being in December 2024 where he confirmed it as a priority. However, there’s a possible project in the pipeline that might divert his focus if it progresses.
Martin Says An Elden Ring Movie Is Currently In Talks
His Involvement, However, May Not Be Possible
Although Martin has delved into movies and television, he’s only dabbled in the world of video games. He executive produced Cyanide’s adaptation of Game of Thrones and co-wrote Elden Ring. The latter project was his most significant endeavor yet, as he collaborated with Hidetaka Miyazaki, President of FromSoftware, on the game’s worldbuilding for its 2022 release. Elden Ring won multiple Game of the Year awards and led to the creation of both the DLC expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, and a new spinoff, Nightrein. Similar to other FromSoftware games, however, its future developments are uncertain beyond this point.
In a recent interview at IGN Fan Fest 2025, Martin hinted at the possibility of an upcoming Elden Ring film. While he did not discuss a potential sequel to the popular open-world game, he did suggest that negotiations for a movie adaptation are currently taking place. However, his participation will hinge on his availability in the future. Here is what he revealed during the interview:
As a passionate cinephile, I’ve been hearing whispers about the potential creation of a film adaptation for Elden Ring. Time will tell if this project materializes and what role, if any, I might play in it. Given my focus on completing my most recent book, my schedule and involvement remain uncertain at this point.
Our Take On Martin’s Elden Ring Movie Comments
His Lack Of Involvement Won’t Necessarily Be A Bad Thing
Martin’s suggestion about an Elden Ring movie being in development is intriguing, especially since the last time anyone associated with the game discussed the possibility of an adaptation was Miyazaki in June 2024, when he expressed his openness to the concept of the game being adapted into a different format. However, it’s worth noting that at that time, Miyazaki mentioned that FromSoftware might not be part of such an adaptation, as he felt neither he nor the company had the expertise or capabilities to handle anything beyond video games.
If Martin’s statements are accurate and he and Miyazaki have a strong bond to collaborate on adapting it, the chances for Elden Ring becoming a movie are quite substantial. However, it’s important to note that the high fantasy genre has faced financial challenges when it comes to big-screen adaptations. Instead, it has experienced a significant comeback on television, as demonstrated by the successes of shows like House of the Dragon, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and The Wheel of Time, among others. Given that discussions are probably still in their early stages, it’s possible that Martin and Miyazaki might find a studio more inclined towards television productions.
As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but feel apprehensive about the absence of George R.R. Martin from the upcoming Elden Ring movie adaptation. The final season of Game of Thrones left many fans disappointed due to its hasty departure from the books. With Martin not directly involved in this project, there’s a concern that it might face similar issues.
However, considering how cryptic some aspects of Elden Ring’s lore are, and given Hidetaka Miyazaki’s significant role in crafting the game, I’m not entirely convinced that Martin’s absence is a deal-breaker. In fact, it could potentially allow for more creative freedom and interpretations, much like how Miyazaki shaped the world of Dark Souls despite not being its author.
