Writer Of Star Wars’ Rey Movie Reflects On His Time In The Galaxy Far, Far Away Before Dropping Out: ‘There’s A System’

It’s clear that “Star Wars” is set to grace our cinema screens once more in 2026, following a lengthy break. Interestingly, the recently released “The Mandalorian & Grogu” movie has achieved something no other announced Star Wars project since the conclusion of the sequel trilogy has managed – it’s now in production. Nevertheless, there’s still a high likelihood that the film featuring Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey will materialize, despite the script undergoing multiple screenwriters.

Initially, when Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s new project was unveiled, Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson were slated to write the script. However, in March 2023, these two departed from the project, only to be followed by Steven Knight, the writer of “Peaky Blinders.” In an interview with The Telegraph, Knight discussed the system he was operating within and his minor role within it, stating:

In simple terms, there’s a process, and when you interact with it, you understand its nature. You perform your tasks, submit your work, such as the drafts I provided, and then the process continues. I anticipate that a significant portion of what I contributed will be included in the final product – we’ll see! But that’s generally how things go.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I’ve come across an interesting piece of news: Before his exit from the impending Star Wars movie, it seems Knight had a conversation that hinted at him knowing his involvement had ended. He spoke about his script in terms of something completed, implying his part was done, yet he also acknowledged that the project itself was not yet over.

Currently, George Nolfi serves as the scriptwriter for the upcoming movie. He’s hinting at a project deeply rooted in the original Star Wars trilogy by George Lucas.

As a die-hard film fan, it appears that despite any past complications, there seems to be no lingering animosity between myself (Knight) and Lucasfilm. I’ve always believed in embracing my role wholeheartedly, and I did just that. Whether the final script reflects substantial portions of my contributions or not remains a mystery until the movie premieres. I can only hope and anticipate that a significant chunk of my work will make it to the big screen, but I can’t guarantee it.

It’s quite common for several writers to iteratively refine a script, but at some stage, it becomes apparent when a film is facing difficulties. For instance, numerous announced Star Wars movies have been scrapped, and it seems that the system Knight mentioned often failed to develop a project that pleased everyone involved.

It’s uncertain when exactly the new Star Wars movie will be released, but there are two unnamed Star Wars productions listed among Disney’s upcoming films. The next available slot is in December 2026, and it appears that this film, if everything goes according to plan, could be the one filling that gap. However, the release date ultimately hinges on when they finalize a script that everyone involved finds satisfactory.
