In the bustling world of Hollywood, I’ve found myself drawn into the ongoing legal saga between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni. These two talented actors, who shared the screen in the upcoming film “It Ends with Us” in 2024, have been trading lawsuits and allegations over the past few months. As a spectator, it’s hard not to take notice as fans voice their opinions. Interestingly, it seems that even Lorne Michaels, the genius behind Saturday Night Live, is taking an interest. This intriguing tidbit comes from Dana Carvey, who recently exchanged texts with Michaels following the show’s 50th anniversary taping, which was a significant event in the 2025 TV schedule.
What Did Lorne Michaels Allegedly Say About The Lively/Baldoni Situation?
50th Anniversary Special of SNL aired about a week ago, brimming with memorable highlights like the star-packed Weekend Update segment. One particularly noteworthy scene was a Q&A session where Amy Poehler and Tina Fey took questions from the audience. Among those who stepped up was Ryan Reynolds, accompanied by his wife Blake Lively. After being asked about their wellbeing, Reynolds responded positively, inquiring, “Why, what have you heard?” while Lively seemed apprehensive.
After some time, it’s become clear that the Reynolds/Lively joke during SNL was pre-arranged, with Deadpool himself suggesting the punchline. This topic was brought up by SNL alums Dana Carvey and David Spade on their Fly on the Wall podcast not long ago. During their conversation, Carvey mentioned a text conversation he had with Lorne Michaels following the show. Based on Carvey’s comments (available on YouTube), it seems that Michaels was particularly fascinated by an ongoing legal dispute surrounding the joke.
The Baldoni/Lively spectacle seemed rather disorganized. I messaged Lorne later, expressing, “You know, if only I could’ve attended.” Instead of discussing the performance, he mentions, “[Baldoni] is planning to file a lawsuit against me. I believe Lively might hire a new lawyer.” I responded, “But wasn’t Tom Hanks outstanding, and that monologue with Steve [Martin] was fantastic?” To which he replied, “I’m not sure about Ryan Reynolds’ involvement, but they certainly have substantial funds.
Currently, the Canadian businessman hasn’t made any public comments regarding the IEWU matter as of now. Regarding the 50th anniversary event (which can be streamed with a Peacock subscription), the actress from “A Simple Favor” was apparently hesitant to attend due to the ongoing legal issues. However, it is reported that she had an enjoyable time in the end. In response to the joke about the situation, the actress’s former co-star’s lawyer, Bryan Freedman, expressed surprise that they would seem to make light of such a serious matter in this manner.
What’s Going On With Blake Lively And Justin Baldoni’s Legal Battle?
In December of 2024, Blake Lively made a legal claim against Justin Baldoni, Wayfarer Studios, and others, accusing Baldoni of sexually harassing her during filming of It Ends with Us. The actress further claimed that Baldoni and his associates retaliated against her by launching a negative campaign when she expressed concerns about working conditions to the studio. In early 2025, Lively followed up on her complaint by filing a lawsuit against Baldoni and his team.
Justin Baldoni, previously let go from WME amidst a controversy, refuted the accusations, leading him to subsequently file a lawsuit against The New York Times for 250 million dollars on charges of libel and additional matters. In due course, Baldoni initiated a lawsuit against his former acting partner, her spouse Ryan Reynolds, as well as others, accusing them of defamation, extortion, and several other offenses. At present, he is pursuing 400 million dollars with this suit.
The latest turn in the Lively/Baldoni case has the actress alleging that two female colleagues had issues with Baldoni during filming. Additionally, she’s being sued by a PR firm due to her filing. At present, neither actor has appeared in court, but a trial is scheduled for March 9th, 2026. In the interim, speculation about this topic may persist among Lorne Michaels and others in the public sphere.
