In every version of the script, a scene referencing Sam’s past was inevitable, and there were several possible ways this could have played out. From the initial drafts that I collaborated on, Bucky has consistently been present, although his role varied somewhat across the various film adaptations.

Stan’s appearance was crucial for maintaining the cohesive narrative of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Given his connection to the Captain America series since its inception and his significant role in Sam Wilson’s transformation into Captain America as seen in “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”, it was only fitting that Bucky Barnes made an appearance in “Brave New World”. Onah added:

Initially, the question was about discovering an intriguing and unexpected way to encounter him. At times, this encounter happened right at the start of the movie, while other times it occurred towards the end. However, what we ended up with turned out to be a delightful surprise as well as an emotionally resonant moment that propels Sam’s narrative forward. I believe we ultimately created something that was engaging, thrilling, and emotionally impactful.

In a brief scene from “Brave New World”, Bucky’s recent political role is disclosed, a detail that could be expanded upon in the upcoming series “Thunderbolts”. However, Onah admitted that he wasn’t privy to much information about this aspect as his role only required him to perform the limited scene featured in the movie. He stated:

To be honest, I don’t have all the details about what happens in the MCU, but I do know that they like to keep things fresh and reinvent their characters. Bucky is one of those characters who is going through changes and trying to find a new identity after being a Hydra-controlled assassin. The writers seem to be taking an unpredictable approach to guide Bucky on this journey, which I think will make for an interesting storyline.
