It seems that DC is betting big on the character of Green Lantern, with a new animated series titled My Adventures with Green Lantern recently announced. After the 2011 film adaptation, Green Lantern, turned out to be a box office flop, it appeared that Warner Bros. and DC Comics had decided to diminish the importance of these characters, even leaving them off the Justice League roster in the DCEU. However, the 2020s seem to be focusing heavily on Green Lantern, as Nathan Fillion will portray Guy Gardner in Superman, while Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler are set to play John Stewart and Hal Jordan respectively in the Max series Lanterns. Now, an animated version of the character Jessica Cruz is in development, but it will be linked to a different popular Superman project that exists outside of the DC Universe.
It’s been confirmed that DC Studios is working on a new animated show titled “My High School Years as Green Lantern“. As reported by Variety, this series will revolve around Jessica Cruz, a high school student who unexpectedly finds herself chosen by a Green Lantern power ring. This cosmic artifact, which fell from the sky, selects her to be its wielder, altering Cruz’s life dramatically as she gets entangled in an intergalactic conflict. Jake Wyatt, one of the creators of “My Adventures with Superman“, will assume the role of executive producer, along with Stephanie Gonzaga, who has extensive experience in animation production from shows like “Invincible“, “Batman: Caped Crusader“, and “My Adventures with Superman“.
Unlike “Creature Commandos,” an animated series situated within James Gunn’s DCU, “My Adventures with Green Lantern” isn’t intended to align with the Green Lantern characters from “Superman” or the live-action “Lanterns” series. Instead, it will be linked to the beloved animated series, “My Adventures with Superman.” This connection was verified by series executive producer Jake Wyatt when he shared on X that, “We’re making a new show! Some of you had questions—the show WILL take place in the same timeline as My Adventures With Superman. I’m excited to delve deeper into this universe alongside my friend @gostephgo!” Here is Wyatt’s post, along with Stephanie Gonzaga’s announcement of her role in the series and the first official title card for the show.
Green Lanterns Light…in Animated Form
The animated series titled “My Adventures with Superman” made its debut on Adult Swim and Max on July 7, 2023, and quickly gained a devoted fanbase due to its innovative interpretation of Superman’s origin while also echoing the classic charm of the character after a decade of gritty reinterpretations in stories like Man of Steel and Injustice: Gods Among Us. The series has been successful enough that despite an upcoming Superman movie, plans for a third season of “My Adventures with Superman” are underway. With the announcement of “My Adventures with Green Lanterns“, it seems possible that a connected DC animated universe could be in development. A hint of “My Adventures with Green Lantern” might be included in season 3 of “My Adventures with Superman“.
Jessica Cruz, a relatively recent addition to DC Comics’ roster, made her debut as the first female Green Lantern in “Justice League” #31, August 2014, following a brief introduction in “Green Lantern” #20 in 2013. The character quickly gained popularity among fans and has since appeared in various DC animated productions like DC Super Hero Girls, Justice League vs. The Fatal Five, and DC League of Super-Pets. She was also slated to be a main character in HBO’s cancelled Green Lantern Corp. series, which was later replaced by Lanterns.
It appears that DC and Warner Bros. are eager to establish the Green Lantern title being shared among characters like Jessica Cruz, John Stewart, Hal Jordan, and Guy Gardner, paving the way for Cruz’s potential appearance in the DC Universe, as well as giving other Green Lanterns an opportunity to take center stage in live-action and animated movies and TV shows. Characters such as Alan Scott, Simon Baz, and Sojourner “Jo” Mullein could potentially have their own moments as Green Lantern, either in the series “My Adventures with Green Lantern” or within the DC Universe.
