The official selection for the Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter TV series has been made.
79-year-old actor John Lithgow has recently confirmed to ScreenRant that he will indeed play Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s upcoming television version of J.K. Rowling’s popular books. The Hollywood Reporter previously reported that discussions about this role were ongoing between Lithgow and the production team.
Apparently, this is quite unexpected for me,” the seasoned actor admitted. “I received a call during the Sundance Film Festival regarding another movie offer, and it’s a challenging choice since it could shape the final stage of my career. However, I’m thrilled about it. It seems that there’s renewed interest in Harry Potter. That’s what makes the decision so difficult. By the time we wrap up, I’ll be around 87 years old, but I’ve agreed to participate.
Lithgow is continuing a tradition set by other actors who played Dumbledore in the hit films, such as Richard Harris, who initially portrayed him in the first two movies, and Michael Gambon, who assumed the role following Harris’s death in 2002, until his passing in 2023.
Over the course of many years and numerous acting roles, John Lithgow has garnered Emmy awards and Oscar nominations. His latest endeavors include appearances in “Conclave”, “The Crown”, “The Old Man”, and “Jimpa”.
The upcoming “Harry Potter” film series, slated to start production this summer, promises a more comprehensive interpretation of J.K. Rowling’s seven-book series compared to the previous movie franchise. This book series narrates the journey of an orphan boy named Harry Potter who, surprisingly, is a wizard and enrolls at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It is here that he masters his magical skills and combats the malevolent Lord Voldemort. Francesca Gardiner assumes the role of showrunner for this series, while Mark Mylod is expected to direct several episodes.
It’s been discovered that Michael Lithgow’s agreement to portray Dumbledore hasn’t been finalized just yet. Although HBO couldn’t officially announce the actor’s role, they did release a statement saying, “We understand there will be much buzz and speculation surrounding such a high-profile series. As we progress through pre-production, we will only reveal details once we’ve completed negotiations.
