As I sat in my dimly lit study, sipping on a cup of bitter tea, I couldn’t help but think of the absurdity of it all. Justin Sun, the enigmatic founder of Tron, had just announced that Tether’s USDT stablecoin would soon be able to ride the Tron blockchain for free. Yes, you heard that right – free! π€
No longer would the poor souls who transferred USDT on the Tron network have to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, also known as gas fees. The “Gas Free” feature, as it’s so aptly named, would allow these transactions to take place without the need for TRX, the native cryptocurrency of the Tron blockchain. And the best part? It’s expected to launch within a week! π
But wait, there’s more! Sun also extended an invitation to teams and wallets interested in supporting this feature to reach out to JustLend, Tron’s official lending platform. Because, of course, what’s a good party without an open bar? π
It’s ironic, really, that Tron was once known for its low-cost USDT transfers. Now, it’s become one of the most expensive networks for USDT transactions. Ah, the fleeting nature of fame and fortune! πΈ
According to Tether’s GasFeesNow page, TRC-20 USDT transactions currently have the highest fees among all supported blockchains, ranging from $3.20 to $6.50. Meanwhile, ERC-20 USDT fees are a mere $0.40. It’s enough to make one weep for the poor souls who are stuck on the Tron network! π

The page explains that estimating gas fees on Tron can be complicated, much like trying to predict the weather in a Siberian winter. TRC-20 USDT transfers require “energy” and “bandwidth,” whatever that means. And heaven help the poor user who doesn’t have enough energy in their wallet – they’ll be stuck paying higher fees! πͺ
Tether data shows that TRC-20 USDT gas fees spiked in late 2024, reaching a whopping $9 per transaction on December 9. It’s a wonder anyone still uses the Tron network at all! π€―
But fear not, dear reader, for the Tron Foundation has been working on gas-free TRC-20 transactions since at least July 2024. And Justin Sun, that eternal optimist, initially aimed to launch the feature by Q4 2024, claiming that such services could help large companies adopt blockchain-based stablecoin solutions. Because, of course, what’s a good revolution without a few large corporations on board? π€
