Doctor Who Returns: Premiere Date Set and Alan Cumming’s Wild Guest Role Revealed!

The TARDIS will be up and running again in April.

The upcoming second season of “Doctor Who,” featuring Ncuti Gatwa as the titular character, will premiere on April 12, according to Disney+ and BBC. (The series restarted its season count with its latest episode, which aired last year. Gatwa is the fifteenth Doctor in the show’s extensive history that spans back to 1963.)

Belinda Chandra steps into the role of the Doctor’s new traveling partner, taking over from Varada Sethu. Meanwhile, Millie Gibson returns to portray Ruby Sunday once again.

The show has revealed that Alan Cumming will make an appearance in the second episode of this season, lending his voice to the character Mr. Ring-A-Ding who escapes from his animated realm. According to the synopsis, “Mr. Ring-a-Ding, a cheerful, humorous, musical cartoon character, resides in Sunny Town with his friend Sunshine Sally. However, in 1952, after decades of screenings in cinemas nationwide, Mr. Ring-a-Ding suddenly perceives the real world beyond the screen, and the repercussions are alarming.” (It’s worth noting that Cumming previously appeared as King James I in a 2018 episode).

Russell T Davies, the showrunner, remarks that only Alan Cumming could infuse a rogue cartoon character with such wit, mischief, danger, and amusement,” he said. “His addition to the Doctor Who universe makes it even more wild and chaotic than before, and it’s a genuine privilege to have him join the TARDIS crew.” Let me introduce you to the ringmaster of excitement: Mr. Ring-A-Ding.

Joining the already announced cast members are Rose Ayling-Ellis, Christopher Chung, Anita Dobson, Michelle Greenidge, Jonah Hauer-King, Ruth Madeley, Jemma Redgrave, and Susan Twist.

Davies serves as executive producer for “Doctor Who” alongside Joel Collins, Phil Collinson, Julie Gardner, and Jane Tranter. This upcoming season, spanning eight episodes, will air weekly on BBC and BBC iPlayer within the United Kingdom and Ireland, and Disney+ in the U.S. and other regions.
