At Time’s Women of the Year event on Tuesday, Olivia Munn, Nicole Kidman, and Anna Sawai were some of the honored leading ladies. During her turn at the podium, Munn spoke candidly about her ongoing fight against breast cancer.
Last year, the actress publicly disclosed her battle with luminal B breast cancer. Since then, she has undergone five surgical procedures, one of which was a hysterectomy. The actress, who tied the knot with comedian John Mulaney in 2024 and is a mother to two young children, expressed her optimism for good health during an appearance at the Women of the Year event in West Hollywood. Addressing the crowd, she raised a toast, saying, “Here’s to wishing for vibrant well-being, here’s to celebrating healthy days.
The star reminisced about the challenges faced by their 5-month-old child, Méi, regarding stomach issues, rashes, and endless crying during the initial month of life. Meanwhile, Munn confessed that she too was finding it difficult to cope with her maternal responsibilities at that time.
She had tried various solutions and eventually took a chance, trusting her instincts. She changed her baby’s formula, and by the first night, the stomach pain, rashes, and crying ceased. This moment, she reminisced, was one of the proudest as a mother. The following Friday, while feeding the baby, she noticed the baby let out a contented sigh, her belly was soft, she smiled, and she seemed healthy. In that moment, she realized she too had been feeling well. Despite having many years of cancer treatment ahead, on that day, she didn’t experience joint pain, wasn’t uncomfortable from surgical menopause symptoms, and her brain fog had lifted, at least for the time being.
Next, Munn vividly described the chaos unfolding at that very moment: her mother was playing loud YouTube videos, her stepfather was frantically chasing ants throughout the house, Mulaney was tidying up a roadkill rat near their home, and their 3-year-old son was clad in a space suit, relieving himself off the balcony.
Holding my little one close, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for every moment I’ve been given to witness her growth. Each day, we face fresh challenges, but I fervently wish the same for all – good health that allows us to cherish these hurdles. So, let’s prioritize our well-being and treat our bodies with the tender care a newborn needs.
At the gathering, Kidman made a brief remark, emphasizing the significance of women supporting one another by “respecting, fostering opportunities for, safeguarding, and inspiring each other.” This space, she noted, is exactly what you’re doing tonight – generating optimism.
