James Gunn and Peter Safran have Met with Game Studios for Future of DC Games

Looking back at 2025, it’s undeniable that DC gaming didn’t quite hit the mark for me. Games like Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which I was really looking forward to, unfortunately, didn’t resonate well with the gaming community.

The upcoming course for DC video games remains uncertain, however, they are set to collaborate closely with the filmmakers at DC Studios.

DC Studios Heads Update on DC Games

At a recent press event (as reported by ComicBook), the heads of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran, shared insights about the current status of the DC universe. Although their discussion primarily focused on future movies and television shows, they also provided a brief glimpse into the realm of gaming.

Safran clarified, “We collaborate very closely with JB Perrette, who oversees that division. This is a first for Warner Bros. James and I meet regularly with the studio heads under JB, including NetherRealm and Rocksteady. We discuss characters and stories that pique our interest as well as theirs.

In summary, NetherRealm Studios, famous for creating the Mortal Kombat series and the Injustice DC fighting games, are distinguished in their field. On the other hand, Rocksteady Studios, well-known as the creators of the successful Arkham Trilogy, have faced a setback with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, a game that faced significant delays and received unfavorable reviews.

As a passionate enthusiast, I can’t help but share that during the initial phases of our projects, we delve into the designs and discuss potential stories. We might suggest, “Perhaps you’d like to explore this narrative direction since we’re considering developing a character with unique traits.

When is the Next Big DC Game Coming Out?

Despite having previously met with certain studios, Gunn has confirmed that the next release will take place in a “few years” time, although the specific title is yet unknown. There have been discussions about a DC-centered game resembling Marvel Rivals/Overwatch, and both Gunn and Safran have expressed interest in exploring this concept.

There’s been chatter about Rocksteady potentially creating a Batman Beyond game, but no formal announcement has been made yet. It’s unfortunate that they chose to scrap the Wonder Woman game. Even though they had triumphs with their Shadow of Mordor series, Warner Bros. Games shut down Monolith’s studio as well.

What Goes Up…

Despite currently experiencing a downturn, there’s a possibility that DC Games could recover within a few years. This is because, just like now, they were enjoying great success a few years ago when Marvel was facing difficulties in releasing games, while DC consistently put out popular titles.

Perhaps, with Marvel successfully striking a balance that refreshes an allegedly exhausted genre of superhero content, it could be beneficial for DC to take a moment, reconsider, and brainstorm a fresh, exciting idea for their upcoming superhero intellectual property in the gaming sector.

Marvel Rivals currently leads the pack, but DC’s characters are equally captivating. In anticipation of their upcoming announcement, they possess ample capabilities to develop something engaging and exciting.
