As a cinephile, when I’m not immersed in the ongoing saga of bringing Constantine 2 and an epic sequel to I Am Legend’s alternate ending to life, my thoughts often drift towards the captivating world of ’60s sci-fi. The legendary Irwin Allen was the mastermind behind those intriguing retro-futuristic shows like Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Land of Giants, and The Time Tunnel. Interestingly enough, it’s these very series that Legendary Television has entrusted me, Akiva Goldsman, to reimagine for a contemporary audience.
It might seem surprising that the versatile author behind both the touching drama “Cinderella Man” and the humorous comic book film “Batman Forever” is now crafting a revamped retro sci-fi TV world. However, Goldsman’s extensive body of work, spanning hits like “A Beautiful Mind,” the Oscar-winning film, and “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” makes him an ideal fit for his upcoming unique assignment.
The bond between these two filmmakers has grown stronger due to their respective work on contemporary versions of “The Poseidon Adventure” and “Lost in Space” (1998). Goldsman aims to rejuvenate three classic science fiction television shows, though specifics about how closely the new TV universe will adhere to its origins remain unclear. With a rich background in television production, having worked on shows like “Fringe”, “Underground”, and co-developing “Titans”, Goldsman also contributed to the creation of “Star Trek: Picard”, which is part of the thriving “Star Trek” resurgence. Given his track record, Goldsman seems an ideal choice for reviving Allen’s distinctive brand of vibrant, retro sci-fi.
Irwin Allen’s Visionary Projects are Ripe for a Modern Reimagining
Allan’s iconic productions hold a significant place in the annals of film and television, embodying the playful atmosphere of the ’60s and ’70s. His notable works encompass classics such as “The Lost World” and “Lost in Space”. Modern directors would relish the opportunity to build upon Allan’s work, and Goldsman will get this chance with three of Allan’s popular ABC sci-fi television shows. Previously reimagined by Legendary TV, “Lost in Space” is now streaming on Netflix.
From 1964 to 1968, the TV series “Journey Beneath the Waves” was broadcast on ABC. It was inspired by the 1961 film with the same name, which was co-written by Allen and Charles Bennett. The show chronicled the thrilling underwater exploits of the nuclear submarine Seaview. In a twist, another series created by Allen, “Land of the Titans,” aired from 1968 to 1979 on ABC. Set in the year 1983, it followed the sub-orbital spacecraft the Spindrift, whose crew had been miniaturized after being caught in a sandstorm. The storyline bears a striking resemblance to “Journey Beneath the Waves.
Allen’s third television series, titled “The Time Tunnel,” aired from 1966 to 1967 and focused on two scientists who got caught in a time vortex while testing time travel technology. This classic sci-fi premise should provide rich material for Goldsman to explore.
