‘I See Where This Is Going’: Found’s Brett Dalton Addresses Fans Who Suspect Trent Is A Bad Guy, And I Get It After Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.

In the 2025 TV lineup, NBC’s “Found” is where you’ll find Brett Dalton, who’s now in his second season portraying Detective Mark Trent. He’s appeared in story arcs on shows like “Chicago Fire” and “The Equalizer” lately, but for many comic book fans, he’s still best recognized as the character Grant Ward from “S.H.I.E.L.D.” Despite the fact that it was over a decade ago when his character was exposed as being secretly part of Hydra, Dalton recently told TopMob that some viewers still expect his characters to turn villainous after “S.H.I.E.L.D.

At SCAD TVfest in Atlanta, I chatted with the cast of Found on the red carpet. One actor commented on Season 2 taking over Law & Order: Organized Crime’s previous time slot, while Shanola Hampton and Mark-Paul Gosselaar highlighted a specific episode. As a fan of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., I seized the opportunity to query Brett Dalton about Ward’s betrayal: does this trait haunt him in his subsequent roles since the character was permanently written off? He responded:

I’ve found myself involved in situations where others might say, “Ah, I can tell who the antagonist will be!” Despite initially appearing to be on the right side, they often predict my actions, saying, “I sense what’s coming next.” There’s an element of that.

Brett Dalton’s portrayal of Ward, later Hive, in the series was so convincing that some viewers found it hard to separate his character from other roles. The shocking revelation of his Hydra allegiance was one of the most significant twists in the show when it aired in 2014, before the division between S.H.I.E.L.D. and the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe. Nowadays, you can stream the series with a Disney+ subscription, while the film Found is available on Peacock.

Mark Trent, as portrayed by Found, is not a carbon copy of Grant Ward 2.0, and he hasn’t strayed from the path of righteousness. Though he’s grappled with his allegiance towards Gabi and M&A versus his responsibilities as a police officer, such internal struggles are common for characters in similar situations. Even Danielle Savre’s character, while enigmatic upon her debut, doesn’t appear to be malevolent at this point. As Dalton further explained:

One aspect of this character that appeals to me is his inherent goodness. To be honest, I believe Sir, who isn’t particularly fond of Heavy Boots, might find it hard to disagree with that assessment. He is a man of integrity and principles, which is evident in his actions. While he may argue about being smarter than Trent, I think he would acknowledge that this character is a good person, always striving to make the right choices. This quality makes him admirable.

In order to obtain crucial information from Mark-Paul Gosselaar’s character, Sir, who had recently been imprisoned, Trent found himself needing to bend his moral standards slightly. However, he did so because there were no other viable choices available. Moreover, if the character that dislikes him the most turns out to be the main antagonist of the series, I believe this speaks volumes about Trent’s role as a protagonist! At the moment, NBC hasn’t announced whether the drama will continue for another season, but Trent is eager to discuss potential storylines for additional episodes.

It seems unlikely that there will be a surprising plot twist regarding his character being a secret agent, as he comes off as an honest and straightforward character. However, it’s hard to completely rule out such a possibility in Season 3.

It’s clear that there are still many surprises to unfold in Found, but fans shouldn’t expect one of those surprises to be Mark Trent being unmasked as a villain. While he may appear stressed, it’s unlikely he’s evil. As suggested by the preview for the upcoming episode airing on Thursday, February 27 at 10 p.m. ET, Sir’s assistance might be required again, potentially leading to difficulties for Trent. Here’s a peek at the preview:

If you’ve skipped some episodes of Season 2 of “Found” or simply need a recap of Season 1, you can catch up on all the episodes released thus far by subscribing to Peacock. Additionally, new episodes will be available to stream the day after they air live on NBC. The shift in Thursday night programming with “Found” replacing “Law & Order: Organized Crime” Season 5 is a common occurrence whenever a show takes over the 10 p.m. ET slot previously held by “Law & Order: SVU”.
