Netflix has built quite a reputation for producing films, TV shows, and documentaries centered around sports. Their newest series, Running Point, a comedy focusing on love, family, and basketball, is another noteworthy addition to their collection and is quickly becoming a must-see show this February.
Running Point will consist of ten captivating episodes and feature the exceptionally gifted Kate Hudson in its leading role. This series is not only executive produced but also co-written by Mindy Kaling, a highly influential figure known for her work on shows like Never Have I Ever and Four Weddings and a Funeral. Joining Kaling are Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen, with the latter also serving as showrunner. Running Point has been in development for over a year, but with its scheduled release date of February 27, 2025, there are several compelling reasons why Running Point is drawing attention this week.
What Is ‘Running Point’ About?
The narrative spotlights the Gordon family, particularly their basketball background, with a special emphasis on Isla Gordon, the lone sister among brothers. Isla, who possesses both love for the game and an understanding of its nuances, has often been disregarded by her family. Initially overlooked by her father, then by her siblings, Isla’s role is managing the charitable arm of the Los Angeles Waves. However, this all shifts when one of her brothers is compelled to step down from his post as president of the Los Angeles Waves.
In her brother’s absence, Isla steps into his role within their family business, facing skepticism from those around her. Yet, she remains determined and takes charge. As new responsibilities fall upon her, she encounters numerous challenges, stepping into an uncertain, male-dominated industry far removed from her previous work in charity. However, instead of backing down, Isla perseveres, crafting a story that’s both humorous and heartfelt – titled “Running Point“. This tale not only centers around the sport but also delves into life’s mysteries and uncertainties, as described by Stassen.
Everyone can find something entertaining here, as it combines humor, emotion, and family situations that many people can identify with. The themes of perseverance and individual development are applicable to all, and I wish they strike a chord with the audience.
‘Running Point’ Is Based on a Real Person
Highlighting Running Point among this week’s Netflix releases is its unique connection to reality. As creator Mindy Kaling explains, the series draws inspiration from the life of Jeanie Buss, a real-life figure who assumed control of the Los Angeles Lakers in 2013 following her father’s passing. Remarkably, Jeanie Buss made history by becoming the first woman to own a championship NBA team when the Lakers triumphed in 2020.
In the creation of the show “Running Point,” Isla Gordon served as a practical guide. As stated by Mindy Kaling, the creative team regularly interacted with Buss, seeking her insight on genuine aspects of her life. Kaling further mentioned that Buss granted them full freedom to portray her life because she desired the series to accurately reflect and entertain. Not only was Buss involved throughout the process, but she also came up with the concept for the show, as revealed by Kaling in an interview with TIME.
Initially, it was Jeanie Buss herself who contacted [someone] due to her appreciation for The Mindy Project and The Office. Often, others portray her as a secondary character in their works. However, she asserted her position, stating, “I’m the one in charge here. I want to be a producer on a series based on my own life.
‘Running Point‘ Has an Impressive Cast
In addition to its unique humor and real-life influences that distinguish it from many other sports-themed productions, Running Point really shines with an exceptional ensemble cast that makes it a must-see TV show. The series is spearheaded by Kate Hudson as Isla, who serves as the main focus of the storyline.
Hudson is accompanied by Justin Theroux as Cam Gordon, the eldest sibling and president of the Waves; Scott MacArthur portrays Ness Gordon, the general manager of the Waves; Drew Tarver assumes the role of Sandy Gordon, the chief financial officer; and Brenda Song stars as Ali Lee, the Waves’ chief of staff and Isla’s lifelong friend. Furthermore, Max Greenfield takes on the character of Lev Levenson, a pediatrician by profession who is engaged to Isla. As Isla navigates her team through tumultuous waters, Lev serves as her sanctuary.
Completing the ensemble are Fabrizio Guido, Toby Sandeman, Jay Ellis, Chet Hanks, Roberto Sanchez, and Keyla Monterroso Mejia. Guido assumes the character of a popcorn vendor who becomes part of the Waves’ inner circle, while Monterroso Mejia embodies her cousin, a shrewd and enterprising personal injury lawyer. Ellis steps into the role of the team’s head coach, with Sandeman as a team player and Hanks as the point guard. Sanchez portrays the leader of the Waves board, representing the established power that Isla must overcome.
Preparing for its debut on Netflix on February 27, 2025, Running Point is shaping up to be an engaging series that offers a blend of laughter and poignant moments. Featuring a gifted ensemble cast and creative team, this show is poised to appeal to a wide audience. The interplay of its sport, family drama, and weighty themes, such as ambition and legacy, infused with heart and humor, positions Running Point as a potential television gem.
