In Monster Hunter Wilds, you’ll find numerous monsters, and it’s undeniable that some of them are quite peculiar. However, there’s something amusingly ordinary about Quematrice, the giant fire-wielding rooster, that strikes me as oddly comical. It doesn’t have an over-the-top design; instead, its unusual combination is what makes it funny.
They’re significantly more challenging compared to the initial Chatzabra, capable of causing quite a hassle – particularly if you’re relying on a close-quarters weapon for combat. Fear not, you’ll soon have this fowl under control, leaving enough power left over to ‘cook’ them (figuratively speaking).
Quematrice – Strengths And Weaknesses
The creature called Quematrice stands tall and has two legs, making close-range weapons less effective as you’d need to focus on its lower parts. However, luckily for us, this beast often bows down to peck, offering ample opportunities to strike its head and upper body. This is crucial because the neck of Quematrice is its most vulnerable spot.
Here are the rest of their weaknesses and strengths:
- Weak Point – Neck
- Elemental/Ailment Weaknesses – Water, Paralysis, Poison
- Elemental/Ailment Strengths – Fire
- Best Weapon Damage – Most weapons deal similar damage, though Severing is slightly more powerful.
Since Quematrice is intrinsically fiery, it naturally exhibits high resistance to fire. However, it has a weakness towards water, though not as profoundly as one would expect. Its head and tail are the most vulnerable to water attacks, making those areas strategic targets when confronting them. Various afflictions can also be effective against them; among these, Paralysis seems especially useful.
Best Equipment To Fight Quematrice

Since Quematrice heavily depends on fire, it would be wise to ensure you have robust fire resistant abilities before engaging with them. However, it’s also important to note that they possess a diverse range of moves that are purely physical, so paying attention to your overall defensive attributes is equally crucial.
As a fan, I’d suggest equipping the Bone set in the initial stages when you encounter Quematrice frequently. This gear offers additional fire resistance and an added defense bonus. Unfortunately, there aren’t many Water-based weapons available at this stage unless you specifically hunt down Balahara. In such cases, any early game weapon could prove beneficial.
Quematrice – Fight Breakdown And Moves
Quematrices may not be the most intricate monsters, but they are adaptable in their attack patterns, swiftly switching between various attacks and executing them efficiently. Let me provide a brief rundown of each attack and suggest strategies for avoiding them:
1. Rapid Slash: This attack is a quick series of slashes that the Quematrice uses to try and catch you off guard. To avoid it, dodge to the side when you see it coming.
2. Poison Spit: The Quematrice spits poisonous goo at you. If you are hit, you will take damage over time. To evade this attack, move away quickly and find higher ground if possible.
3. Energy Burst: This is a powerful energy attack that the Quematrice releases in a wide area. Dodge back or roll to avoid being hit by it.
4. Summon Minions: The Quematrice summons smaller minion creatures to aid it in battle. Focus on taking down these minions first before engaging the main monster.
5. Teleportation: The Quematrice can teleport around the battlefield, making it difficult to predict its movements. Keep your distance and be prepared to dodge or move quickly if it appears near you.
Move | Description | Counter |
---|---|---|
Peck | Quematrice pecks in front of them, and can do it multiple times in a row. | Simply step out of the way, and punish them during the lengthy animation. |
Fire Tail Whip | When you are by Quematrice’s side or behind, they will swipe their tail followed by a burst of flame. | Dodge towards Quematrice’s head to escape the trail of fire. Dodging away can work, but you can still get hit if you don’t move far enough away. |
Running Tail Spin | Quematrice quickly runs towards you and spins with their tail at the last second, unleashing a torrent of flame. | The range on this one is shorter, so dodge further away when you see them coming to a stop to avoid this. |
Bite | Quematrice will reel back and quickly bite in front of them. They can also potentially lunge to the left and right with this attack as well. | Like the peck, move to the side they aren’t biting in and punish them afterwards. |
Fanned Flame | Quematrice stands up tall and spreads a flammable liquid before igniting it a moment later. This burst of flame is larger than others and deals more damage. | This attack is harder to avoid, but easier to punish. When you see Quematrice standing up tall, move away from where they’re looking and attack them. |
Its physical assaults aren’t particularly dangerous and can generally be overcome with a sufficiently strong weapon, but its fire attacks tell a different tale. They possess strong knockback and can inflict substantial damage if you fail to dodge them properly. Keep in mind that the tail swipe and the burst of flame are two distinct attacks, and it’s quite simple to find yourself hit by both simultaneously.
A useful piece of information – since Quematrice needs to employ an inflammable substance for their assaults, they are incapable of deploying any fire-based attacks when in water bodies. This is due to the fact that they can’t ignite the liquid in water.
