One intriguing character in James Cameron’s Avatar series that has proven surprisingly layered is Colonel Miles Quaritch, portrayed by Stephen Lang. In the initial movie, he embodied the quintessential villain, only to suffer a tragic demise at the story’s close. Remarkably, over a decade elapsed before the sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, hit screens, yet it delivered beyond anticipations and emerged as an engaging blockbuster. A significant portion of this success can be attributed to Lang’s captivating portrayal of the resurrected Quaritch. In this second installment, his character is given a new avatar body, making him the embodiment of what he once sought to annihilate. Despite surviving the events in the second film, Lang recently shared some insights into Colonel Quaritch‘s future in a recent interview.
In a chat with Collider about his character in the Amazon Prime Video series “House of David,” Lang was queried if he had finished shooting scenes for “Fire & Ash” and the additional “Avatar” films that James Cameron has announced. The performer expressed that although he thinks he’s done due to the extensive footage shot, there might still be a possibility he would have to revisit the set for retakes, expressing:
* While I believe I am done because of the sheer amount of footage we shot, it’s always possible I may need to return for reshoots.
I tentatively agree, absolutely, but with Jim, things can be unpredictable. I believe my work is completed. I feel like I’ve already reached the end of my tether! I’ve had enough! However, as I mentioned, with him there’s a constant call that says ‘We need you here. Get over here,’ and I will go. I think we’re finished, but who knows with Jim.
Colonel Quaritch’s Story in ‘Avatar’ Is Far From Over
In the upcoming movie, Avatar: Fire & Ash, Colonel Quaritch’s journey offers several intriguing prospects. His relentless pursuit of revenge against Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) is one such development. Moreover, an unexpected twist unfolds as Quaritch discovers a son he was unaware of, Spider (Jack Champion). The past Avatar films have primarily portrayed humans as the adversaries; however, this time around, it’s fascinating to see how James Cameron depicts the concept of “evil” among the Na’vi through the Mangkwan Clan (Ash People) in the third installment. The movie promises to delve into Quaritch’s allegiances during the conflict between the diverse Na’avi clans.
It remains unclear where the future Avatar films might lead our characters, as at least two more movies are scheduled for the series. James Cameron has already started shooting the fourth movie, which doesn’t yet have a title, while Avatar 5 is also in the works. Given Cameron’s expansive vision for the franchise and Lang’s mention of extensive footage he’s gathered, it’s possible that our characters might appear only in the fourth film, with new characters and settings introduced in Avatar 5.
As a movie aficionado, I must admit that it’s premature at this stage to predict the destiny of specific characters, including Quaritch. This man has shown an uncanny knack for survival, even defying death itself to torment the Na’vi and Jake Sully in particular. The gripping tension between these two entities was a significant factor fueling the narrative of “The Way of Water.” Anticipation is high to witness how James Cameron will weave this intense rivalry into the plot of “Avatar: Fire & Ash.
