The UK’s movie theater chain Odeon has posted a listing for “Fantastic Four: First Steps” with a run time of 140 minutes. This isn’t uncommon for movies within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it is notably longer than the previous installments in the series.
Recent MCU Films Have Been Getting Shorter
In recent times, it’s become unusual for Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films to exceed two and a half hours, a trend that was quite common earlier. In fact, the norm has shifted, and only a few recent MCU movies have gone beyond this length. For instance, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 stands out with its extended runtime. On the other hand, films like Deadpool, Wolverine, Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania, Captain America: Brave New World, and The Marvels have kept their runtimes relatively short, with the latter being the shortest in the entire MCU franchise.
The runtime you see isn’t definitive as of now. With the release date for Fantastic Four: First Steps being several months off, it’s highly likely that the film is still undergoing post-production work. Even if the runtime is an estimated figure from Marvel Studios, there might be further adjustments. It’s also plausible that this duration is merely a temporary placeholder at the theater until they receive the official runtime.
A Variety Of Runtimes Is Probably Good For The MCU
It’s not necessarily suggesting a new trend of longer movies in the MCU when Fantastic Four: First Steps has a longer runtime, as it might not have been deliberate on Marvel Studios’ part to shorten runtimes in recent films either. Instead, it appears that Marvel Studios may not be overly concerned about movie lengths and is simply focusing on what works best for each individual film.
It seems logical that the upcoming Fantastic Four movie might run a tad longer, given that the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films have primarily been sequels. Consequently, they don’t require extensive world-building or character development since those elements have already been established. However, as Fantastic Four is said to be separate from the traditional franchise and will likely need to establish its own universe and characters from scratch, it may necessitate a bit more screen time to tell a comprehensive story. In the end, if fans enjoy the film, they’ll likely be content to spend a little extra time with it.
