As Star Wars enthusiasts were buzzing about the Season 2 trailer for Andor, set to stream on Disney+ from April 22nd, Lucasfilm unexpectedly announced a theater re-run of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith in 2025. This revelation was accompanied by a special poster marking the film’s 20th anniversary, causing Samuel L. Jackson himself to express excitement over the upcoming re-release.
Unlike the original Revenge of the Sith poster *which featured Darth Vader’s looming presence behind floating heads of Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen, and Natalie Portman, Jackson, and Yoda and gave away the epic lightsaber battle between McGregor and Christensen characters) the 20th-anniversary poster designed by Matt Ferguson is much simpler. That poster features the same looming Darth Vader presence and a smaller silhouette of the lightsaber battle, but instead of floating heads, it’s Christensen’s Anakin Skywalker that takes center stage. In addition, the background depicts the space battle and Mustafar.
Initially, the poster caught the eye of Jackson, known for his role as Jedi Mace Windu in the Star Wars prequels. He then decided to share this poster with his 8.8 million followers, accompanying it with three virtual fist bumps in his caption. Here it is:
If Jackson feels excited, I do too! The re-release of Revenge of the Sith isn’t unexpected since Lucasfilm and Disney have a pattern of re-releasing films for additional theatrical showings during significant anniversary years. However, it’s a significant event because it’ll be the first time the movie is released in 4DX technology across the US and worldwide. Frankly, watching Anakin Skywalker’s transformation into Darth Vader on a large screen with motion seats could challenge Disney Parks’ Star Wars attractions!
In 2005, Episode III wrapped up the prequel trilogy. It was the final Star Wars film before Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2015, initiating the sequel trilogy. The story unfolds three years post-Clone Wars (as depicted in Episode 2). Initially, Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi and Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker save Chancellor Palpatine from General Grievous. Unfortunately, Grievous’ escape is not the only trouble – Anakin forms a connection with Palpatine, eventually betraying the Jedi Order when asked to spy on the chancellor. This treachery leads him down the path of the Dark Side, forcing other Jedi into hiding, even the most potent among them.
Unfortunately, Mace Windu, played by Jackson, meets his end at the hands of Sith Lord Darth Sidious/Palpatine and Anakin in the movie. However, he reappears in the animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars , which takes place during the three-year gap between Episode II and Episode III. He also lends his voice to a scene in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, during Rey’s fight against a revived Palpatine. Additionally, there have been whispers that Jackson might reprise his role as Mace Windu again in the future, with the star of Pulp Fiction expressing interest.
The movie “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith” is set to premiere on April 25th, and it will be playing in multiple formats for a single week. Currently, tickets have not become available for purchase.
