From my perspective, cinema, a captivating artform that’s barely a century old, is constantly playing catch-up with literature, which has roots stretching back millennia. The ocean of narratives available in literature, particularly the science fiction genre, is vast and teeming with dedicated followers. Over time, film studios have procured the rights to numerous sci-fi novels, transporting their intricate tales and vivid characters from the written word to the big screen. These stories frequently entice audiences with their imaginative futuristic concepts, technologies, and societies.
Although they might be set in distant future eras, these worlds often mirror our own and offer a glimpse into potential future realities – serving as cautionary tales about what lies ahead.
These science fiction stories could take us on journeys through time and space, or they might be based in a post-apocalyptic setting closer to home. Some of these sci-fi adaptations are from recently published bestsellers, while others are based on classic novels that have endured the test of time, even if you haven’t read them yourself. Winter is an ideal time to curl up with a good book under a warm blanket. Alternatively, you can look forward to watching one of these upcoming sci-fi adaptations on screen soon.

The eagerly awaited upcoming movie titled “Mickey 17” is the work of Bong Joon-ho, the renowned filmmaker known for his Academy Award-winning film, “Parasite.” This new production is adapted from the 2022 novel “Mickey7” by Edward Ashton. The story revolves around a disposable clone worker named Mickey, who undertakes a perilous mission to establish a colony on an icy planet.
The movie “Mickey 17” seems perfectly suited to the style of director Bong Joon-ho, thanks to its original concept and eccentric characters. A talented ensemble, including Robert Pattinson, Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo, spearhead this production. Given Bong Joon-ho’s stellar history of filmmaking, it’s reasonable to anticipate outstanding performances in “Mickey 17.

‘The Running Man’
November 7, 2025
In a far-off dystopian era, the storyline revolves around a television game titled “The Runner’s Game,” where individuals who have been convicted of crimes (referred to as ‘runners’) aim to evade being killed by skilled assassins. Not everyone is aware that “The Runner’s Game” originated from the novel bearing the same name, although it was penned under the pseudonym Richard Bachman by author Stephen King.
The movie “The Running Man,” initially released in 1987 starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, was a comedic action film adaptation that deviated from Stephen King’s intended dark allegory. However, the upcoming remake in 2025, still titled “The Running Man,” is rumored to have a grimmer tone and stick closer to the book’s narrative. The latest cast members for this reboot include Glen Powell as the main character, along with Josh Brolin, Michael Cera, William H. Macy, David Zayas, Sean Hayes, and Colman Domingo.

‘Frankenstein’
November 2025
Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel, Frankenstein, is famously recognized as the initial true work of science fiction literature. Its influence on horror and sci-fi genres has been profound and enduring, a legacy that remains relevant today. Over time, numerous interpretations of Shelley’s timeless narrative have emerged. In 2025, an eagerly anticipated addition to this collection is set to be released. Despite the multitude of Frankenstein films, there are several reasons to be thrilled about this specific adaptation. One notable aspect is that its director and writer is Guillermo del Toro, a highly esteemed filmmaker who excels at weaving fantasy, horror, and gothic elements into his narratives. This makes him ideally suited for bringing Shelley’s tale of a creature rejected by its creator to life on screen.
In the second place, for approximately two decades, “Frankenstein” has been a deeply cherished endeavor for director Guillermo del Toro. He famously stated that he would be willing to sacrifice anything to bring this film to fruition. Fortunately, he didn’t have to resort to such extreme measures. Instead, Del Toro emphasized his intention to highlight the story’s tragic aspects. By 2025, Netflix provided Del Toro with the opportunity to realize his unique vision for the project. In this adaptation, Oscar Isaac portrays Victor Frankenstein, while Jacob Elordi takes on the role of Frankenstein’s monster, leading an ensemble cast.

‘Project Hail Mary’
March 20, 2026
The 2021 science fiction novel titled “Project Hail Mary,” penned by Andy Weir, narrates a story where an astronaut finds himself all alone on his spaceship, devoid of any recollection about himself or his objective to rescue Earth. In the upcoming movie adaptation, Ryan Gosling assumes the role as the lone survivor of this mission and serves as one of its co-producers as well.
Andy Weir is known for penning the novel “The Martian“, which became a 2015 Oscar-nominated film featuring Matt Damon. On March 20, 2026, his new book “Project Hail Mary” will hit shelves, and if it’s as compelling as “The Martian“, we can look forward to another exciting sci-fi read.

Untitled ‘Dune’ Sequel
2026
Frank Herbert’s 1965 science fiction masterpiece, boldly titled “Dune“, marks the beginning of the epic Dune Saga. The groundbreaking novel has left an indelible mark on the science fiction world and is often hailed as the best-selling science fiction book ever written. Over the course of his career, Herbert authored six novels in this series. Posthumously, Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert, Frank Herbert’s son, have carried on the story with more than a dozen subsequent books.
Originally penned by Frank Herbert, the classic novel Dune has been magnificently transformed into a two-part film series by Denis Villeneuve: “Dune” in 2021 and “Dune: Part II” in 2024. Both films were acclaimed for their grand scale, exceptional acting, and stunning visuals. In development is a third installment, based on the second book of Herbert’s series, “Dune Messiah“. This will mark Villeneuve’s final contribution to the Dune franchise. The movie is still some time away, with a 2026 release date and yet-to-be-determined title. Will it be “Dune: Part III” or “Dune Messiah”? Regardless, this sci-fi adaptation will continue to generate buzz as we approach 2025.
