Simu Liu possesses a versatile skill set. He excels at building an impressive physique for action parts, and his knack for comedy earned him roles ranging from the Barbie cast to portraying Shang Chi in upcoming Marvel productions. In Hollywood, he’s considered an ordinary guy, but according to himself, he’s not so skilled when it comes to accounting.
In an interview with TODAY about his 2025 film “Last Breath”, Liu shared that prior to his acting career, he worked as an accountant. However, it seems he isn’t particularly proud of this past profession, admitting that he wasn’t very good at it.
After completing my education in accounting, I worked as an accountant for approximately eight months before being let go. Now, if someone wants to potentially commit tax fraud, I’d be more than willing to assist them with their taxes. In fact, I would find the task quite enjoyable. However, it is important to note that the tax returns prepared by me would not be accurate.
The individual has a knack for crafting an impressive birthday message for John Cena, yet under no circumstances should you entrust him with your tax documents. His certainty regarding the success of Shang Chi 2 seems unwavering, and let me tell you, we’re all eager to learn more about its progress.
Simu Liu recounted that his job loss in accounting happened to pave the way for his journey into acting. He reminisced about a particular workday when he left early upon seeing an ad for a film role by a renowned director, marking the beginning of his acting career.
I responded to a Craigslist posting seeking an extra for a Guillermo del Toro film, and since I assumed no one would search for me there, I switched off my phone. When the day ended, I reactivated my phone to find 42 missed calls, which was quite surprising! It seemed unlikely that I’d keep the job after such a turn of events.
In 2013, he played an extra in the movie “Pacific Rim.” This minor role eventually led to his major breakout part in “Kim’s Convenience” a few years after. Unfortunately, the series ended prematurely, but it paved the way for the cast members to pursue larger roles. I would be delighted if I heard that the series was being brought back to life, though I believe such a revival is unlikely now.
Currently, he’s a Marvel hero, and though I’m happy to revisit his standalone movie using my Disney+ membership, I’m eager for Shang Chi to have a larger part in “Avengers: Doomsday” or another group film. Although he recently made an appearance in Marvel’s “What If…?”, we could use more of Liu in Marvel productions!
I appreciate Simu Liu’s transparency about his past as a bad accountant, but considering that role, it seems fitting for him to capitalize on his background. After all, he could have been an ideal choice for the The Accountant series. However, there’s a chance he might revert to old habits and end up as an extra in another director’s production instead.
