James Mangold Prioritizes ‘Dawn of the Jedi’ Over DCU’s ‘Swamp Thing’!

At no other time have there been as many newly-produced movies in development as there are currently, with numerous renowned filmmakers all contributing to the ongoing space adventure franchise saga. One of these is being directed by the filmmaker behind “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” who seems to be so sought after that multiple significant projects are on hold until he’s available. As the president of Lucasfilm recently disclosed, this is a situation she is content with, but it might pose problems for his DC Universe project.

Last week, during an update from James Gunn and Peter Safran in DC, it was disclosed that the planned Swamp Thing movie has been postponed because Mangold chose to work on the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown instead. Later, Kennedy hinted that after promoting his film ahead of this year’s Oscars, he will shift focus back to his Dawn of the Jedi project, effectively pushing Swamp Thing further down the line.

During a comprehensive conversation with Deadline, Kennedy touched upon various topics, such as speculations about her upcoming retirement, and was queried if the James Mangold prequel film was still in development. In response, she confirmed:

Absolutely, Simon is currently engaged in script development. We’ve collaborated with him for approximately a year and a half, Shawn. As for the others, they are ready to contribute now. Jim experienced a slight delay due to his involvement in the Dylan movie and the awards season. It’s crucial to accommodate top-tier talent when possible. And remember, quality is paramount to our Star Wars project. I prefer to bring onboard individuals who show genuine passion and exceptional skills for this venture.

DC Studios Are Happy to Wait for Mangold, Even If ‘Swamp Thing’ Never Gets Made

As a movie reviewer, I recently caught wind of an exciting update regarding DC Studios’ upcoming take on Swamp Thing. Following a similar tone set by Kennedy, Peter Safran hinted that director Mangold is expected to rejoin the project for their film at some point in the future. To quote Safran himself, he mentioned this during our chat.

The director/writer of Swamp Thing moved on to work on another small project titled A Complete Unknown. We eagerly anticipate his return to Swamp Thing when he feels ready. As much as we admire him as a filmmaker, we’re content to be patient. It’s worth noting that Swamp Thing is not a critical part of the broader narrative we’re developing.

According to Kennedy’s recent statements, it appears that Mangold might venture into the distant star-filled universe before revisiting the realm of comic book films for “Swamp Thing.” Given his past work on the last Indiana Jones film, Mangold seems to have a good relationship with Lucasfilm and Disney, which could explain his potential return. However, the fate of his “Swamp Thing” movie remains uncertain, and fans may not see significant progress towards Swampy’s cinematic comeback this year.
