On Saturday evening, the 50th Anniversary celebration at SNL was brimming with unforgettable moments. Highlights ranged from Tom Hanks reappearing and stirring up some drama during “Black Jeopardy,” to Jenna Ortega making an impactful impression by getting squashed. However, the entire weekend served as a special event for long-time cast members on the show, as Friday night’s SNL50: The Homecoming Concert featured a multitude of well-known artists, among them Andy Samberg who has been with the team for years.
Indeed, in a memorable instance, he performed his classic song “Dick in a Box” alongside Lady Gaga. This spontaneous performance quickly became a trending topic and was widely talked about in the subsequent days. The event then transitioned into a Digital Short medley that stood out as one of the show’s most noteworthy moments.
However, one might wonder how Lady Gaga ended up being part of the event, considering she wasn’t originally the “Dick in a Box” performer. Also, it was surprising to see Justin Timberlake absent. Fortunately, Andy Samberg clarified these points and more in his account of assembling the SNL50 Concert.
How Lady Gaga Got Involved With Dick In A Box
Samberg is participating less frequently on SNL compared to his previous stints, yet his podcast with Seth Meyers, named “The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers,” delved into the behind-the-scenes story of its creation. Surprisingly, there was significantly less planning involved than one might expect.
According to the leader of The Lonely Island, the reason for this event was simply because they hadn’t been working on any fresh content. It wasn’t until just a week prior that Lady Gaga joined in as the musical guest for the project.
The most challenging aspect had been finalized as the songs were already composed, but what made it tricky was that we only began working on it a week prior. Initially, we anticipated other musicians would handle all the tracks. However, Aaron David (sp) and some SNL team members managed to get in touch with Lady Gaga, who expressed interest in collaborating with me on the project instead.
It’s important to note that Samberg was thrilled to collaborate with the actress and singer from “A Star Is Born” and he acknowledged her film role before their “Dick in a Box” skit. The outcome on stage might not have suggested it, but Samberg felt somewhat intimidated by working alongside Gaga, but it ended up being quite humorous.
Initially, I responded, “Sure thing.” However, it wasn’t until the day before that I realized the gravity of my agreement – I was going to perform a duet with Lady Gaga! At first, I was taken aback, thinking, “Oh dear, this isn’t just chatting with Justin anymore.
Oh yeah, so where was Justin anyway?

Why Justin Timberlake Was Out And Lady Gaga, Bad Bunny And Eddie Vedder Were In
Andy Samberg suggests that Lady Gaga joined the show only after Justin Timberlake turned it down; the two were previously hosts and musical guests simultaneously on Saturday Night Live. Now, other high-profile artists like Bad Bunny (who’s also known for wrestling), Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam (dressed as a character), and T-Pain are also part of the lineup, regrettably sans T-Pain’s signature pashmina shawl.
It’s clear that Justin was touring, which is why everything unfolded as it did. She was fantastic, and we were fortunate that everyone who joined in was so eager to participate. It was a delight to have Parnell back with us again. However, having Bad Bunny, T-Paine, Eddie Vedder as Jack Sparrow on board made the whole experience even more extraordinary. It truly amplified our sense of the show’s significance. I must say, it was incredibly exhilarating for me.
The absence of Justin was somewhat disappointing, but according to Seth Meyers, the final outcome was terrific, largely due to those participating, especially Eddie Vedder. Meyers emphasized that this is essential for being part of Saturday Night Live; when non-comedians understand the dynamic, the end product is always superior.
Although Samberg mentioned that writing the songs eased the process, rehearsing proved to be quite challenging for everyone involved as they put in considerable effort. The medley’s composition was intricate, causing Gaga some difficulties with mastering the piano parts. Contrary to an assumption that they could merely turn up and perform flawlessly without much preparation, it was far from a simple task. However, their hard work paid off, and the outcome turned out to be one of the most memorable moments of the evening.
