Demi Moore’s award-winning performance in “The Substance” at the 2025 Golden Globes has raised the bar, causing a stir throughout the awards season of that year. The 2025 Oscar-nominated horror film with a body theme is filled with startling metamorphoses, but its most unnerving scene doesn’t involve gore—it delves into feelings of insecurity and self-doubt. The now-famous bathroom mirror scene from the movie has resonated with viewers, and during an interview, the star of “G.I. Jane” explained why she found its intense realism appealing.
It was during a chat with CBS Mornings that Demi Moore opened up about the raw vulnerability required to bring some of the harder emotional scenes to life. As explained in a clip from the interview, which was shared to the talk show’s official Instagram account, the veteran actress admitted that she knew from the start that the work wouldn’t be glamorous. The Ghost actress shared:
From the start, I understood that this wouldn’t be a glamorous experience, but rather one that would highlight aspects we usually try to keep hidden. Yet, looking back, I found solace and value in it. The act of being so open, granting permission for vulnerability, accepting it – it was a deeply personal liberation. I hope, in some way, it has offered the same freedom to others as well.
Actors often take on roles that necessitate them to expose their vulnerability. This was undeniably true for the lead actress in the critically-acclaimed horror movie, who openly spoke about the challenging nature of filming a specific scene. The actor from “A Few Good Men” confessed that this particular scene was tough to shoot, detailing the exhaustion she experienced due to numerous takes, leaving her face red and raw. She further added:
In simpler terms, when you’re trying to improve something but end up making it worse instead, it can be extremely disheartening. In this specific scenario, I believe the key point is that regardless of any external efforts she makes, the real issue lies within, and until that inner problem is addressed, nothing else will truly improve the situation.
Now that “The Substance” is streaming on Mubi, Demi Moore’s brave portrayal in the movie is still creating quite a stir and garnering significant award consideration. With an impressive five Oscar nominations, a rarity even for top-tier horror films, this film has undeniably established itself as a groundbreaking force that transcends genre boundaries.
However, while it undeniably delivers on its gory and unsettling elements, aptly referred to by some as “pushing boundaries until nausea,” the film by Coralie Fargeat resonates profoundly with a personal touch. It compels viewers to grapple with the same fears that haunt Elisabeth, and at the core lies Demi Moore’s remarkable transformation. Every instance of psychological distress she portrays feels strikingly authentic.
The renowned bathroom mirror scene is a brilliant demonstration of acting skill. It beautifully portrays the raw emotion that sets The Substance apart as more than just a typical horror film. It’s an unnerving, strikingly human instant that stays with you long after the final credits have played.
If you’re eager to watch the movie yourself, “The Substance” can now be streamed right from your own home. Perfect timing for those planning to catch the 97th Academy Awards, which will air live on ABC this coming Sunday, March 2, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
