Is it essential to produce another film named “The Mummy” so soon? Given that less than a decade has elapsed since the last attempt to resurrect Universal’s 1932 horror movie classic failed disastrously, ending the Dark Universe without any hope of revival, it might seem unnecessary. But my curiosity was piqued when I learned that this reboot would be directed by Lee Cronin.
The film, initially referred to as an untitled Blumhouse project from the director of “Evil Dead Rise,” immediately caught my attention. However, it was when Cronin shared on various social media platforms (including X) that he and the studio were revealing something familiar, that I became truly intrigued. Given Cronin’s comments about his plans for a fresh take on the chilling story of a revived mummified body (more details later), it’s safe to say I am genuinely thrilled. Naturally, when it comes to any upcoming horror movie, particularly those based on established properties, there are some questions about what we might see. Before delving into my speculative thoughts about the “The Mummy” reboot, let’s first consider the facts that have been disclosed.
Quick Facts About The Mummy
According to existing knowledge, the movie titled The Mummy hails from a highly skilled horror filmmaker who is currently recognized as one of the best in the field, as well as a renowned studio that is known for its expertise and popularity within the horror genre.

Questions I Have About The Mummy

Although I’m not an archaeologist, I do have some familiarity with the horror genre. With Lee Cronin on board, there’s a possibility that The Mummy could be one of Blumhouse’s best films in quite some time. However, my curiosity remains piqued about certain aspects.
In What Time Period Will The Mummy Reboot Take Place?

Lee Cronin’s statement to The Hollywood Reporter hints at an intriguing twist for the upcoming Mummy film. Instead of merely stating he’s delving into antiquity to awaken something terrifying, it seems we might be in for a fresh take on the classic story. This could mean the film could potentially unfold in Ancient Egypt or perhaps revolve around a revived artifact from a forgotten civilization like the Aztecs.
The Irish filmmaker might be hinting at a more terrifying experience in this upcoming film compared to its past versions when he uses the term “digging deep.” Whether he means it literally or figuratively, we can’t predict if the story will unfold in contemporary settings like the 2017 movie with Tom Cruise (an unexpected reboot), or delve into historical periods as the 1999 blockbuster did under Brendan Fraser’s leadership. By the way…
Will Brendan Fraser Be Involved?

After news broke about another Mummy film being planned, there was a wave of people, including Sarah El-Mahmoud among many others, expressing on social media their desire for Brendan Fraser to be part of it. Before his Academy Award win for The Whale (2022) solidified his career resurgence, the actor expressed interest in reprising his role as Rick O’Connell in a fourth Mummy movie, should there be one.
It seems clear now that Cronin is probably deviating from the style of the ’90s film we all love, considering Fraser’s movies are primarily action/adventure thrillers rather than horror. Yet, this doesn’t preclude him from providing a brief appearance for our favorite actor to delight the fans.
Any Chance Of An Evil Dead Reference?

Apart from Fraser’s “Mummy” series, I’d also be intrigued if Cronin might draw inspiration from another popular franchise for his reboot. Notably, in 2023, Cronin directed “Evil Dead Rise”, the fifth film in the “Evil Dead” collection, which shares some similarities with the “Mummy” series.
In every film of the popular horror movie series produced by Sam Raimi, there’s an old text known as the Necronomicon Ex Mortis. Reading this ancient book can resurrect the dead, similar to how a book could awaken a mummified corpse in the original Mummy and its sequels. Since both stories share this common theme, it could be intriguing for Cronin to subtly acknowledge the franchise that catapulted him to fame by linking these two worlds together.
Will Any Actors From Lee Cronin’s Previous Movies Appear?

Regardless of whether Cronin omitted an “Evil Dead” reference in “The Mummy” (or perhaps was restricted by law from doing so), there are still creative opportunities for him to link the series. One idea that appeals to me is having him work again with Alyssa Sutherland, delivering a spine-tingling portrayal as a possessed mother in “Evil Dead Rise,” or Lily Sullivan, who was also featured in the sequel, playing her character battling to safeguard her young nephew and nieces.
Instead, it might pique my curiosity even more to witness Cronin drawing from deeper within his filmography and teaming up on the remake with any of the stars from his less recognized horror debut, “The Hole in the Ground.” Seána Kerslake delivers a remarkable performance in the 2019 Irish thriller as a mother who doubts her son’s true identity, while James Quinn Markey is notably eerie in the role. It would be delightful to see either of them feature in “The Mummy,” which, without a doubt, would mark their most prominent roles in a major motion picture to date.
As The Mummy does not appear on our 2025 film schedule, we have ample time until Lee Cronin’s interpretation of this timeless story graces the big screen. During this period, you can certainly ask questions about it, and in the interim, the original 1932 Universal Monster film is available for rental online, while the 1999 blockbuster is currently one of the top movies on Hulu.
