On February 27, 2025, I was thrilled to tune into Netflix’s newest sports-focused comedy, “Running Point,” starring the exceptional Kate Hudson in the lead role. This series, created by the brilliant Mindy Kaling along with Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen, promises to be a delightful watch, given its engaging, heartwarming storyline. With ten episodes, each roughly half an hour long, “Running Point” looks set to become my next favorite binge-watch.
This show primarily focuses on the Gordon clan, zeroing in on Isla Gordon (portrayed by Kate Hudson), who takes charge of the Los Angeles Waves basketball team as its coach. Her older brother, Cam Gordon, is suddenly stripped of his Waves presidency due to a drug scandal that lands him in rehab. Despite being a comedy, Running Point delves into profound family and relationship issues, creating a storyline encompassing ambition, legacy, and personal development. Contrary to what viewers might anticipate from a cheerful setup, the series introduces some unexpected plot twists at the end.
Do the Waves Win the Championship in ‘Running Point’?
In the course of the series “Running Point”, the main objective for the Los Angeles Waves team is clearly to qualify for the playoffs and secure the championship title. Throughout this gripping narrative, fans eagerly anticipate whether the Waves will clinch victory. Given its sports genre, viewers are optimistic about a successful ending. The team faces numerous obstacles, such as a coach’s suspension and star player Travis Bugg seeking treatment for substance abuse, yet they press on in their quest to reach the playoffs.
In a nerve-wracking playoff match, with mere seconds left on the clock and the Waves ahead, their opponents make an extraordinary shot to snatch victory. Thus, unfortunately, the Waves lose the championship right when the buzzer sounds. Much like in a typical sports film where the underrated protagonist, battered and bruised, emerges victorious, this is not the case here. Instead, this is the plot of “Running Point,” a series that, despite its comedic nature, delves deeper than mere humor, exploring weightier topics.
Do Lev and Isla End Up Together in ‘Running Point’?
Introducing Lev Levenson (Max Greenfield), who is Isla’s fiancé for three years, having been a couple for six years in total – he’s a dedicated pediatrician with a gentle, understanding, and supportive nature. Through the toughest trials Isla faced, Lev stood by her side. It appeared they were on track for their fairytale ending, but there was one potential obstacle: Jay Brown, the head coach of Waves.
In nearly the final episode of “Running Point,” Lev and Isla call it quits. Lev voices his feelings of being overlooked as Isla seems to prioritize the Waves team over him, leading to their separation. Lev leaves their shared home, leaving Isla devastated. A glimmer of optimism emerges when Isla learns that Lev is relocating to Minnesota. In a bold move, she storms into his workplace in a desperate attempt to win him back. However, the encounter doesn’t result in the desired outcome. Instead, Lev informs Isla that she must face her greatest fear – patience – as he tells her that she has to wait.
Lev’s reluctance to resume the relationship immediately and his absence at the major game might suggest that Isla’s attempts are coming too late. The dynamic between Isla and coach Jay adds complexity to their former relationship, as the series hints that there may be feelings between them. This is emphasized in the show when they share a puzzling kiss during the final episode, leaving both of them unsure about what happened. This ambiguity leaves viewers wondering if Lev and Isla will reunite, and whether Jay will still move to Boston. The answers to these questions might become clear only in future seasons.
What Does Cam’s Return Mean for Isla in ‘Running Point’?
In the final moments of the season, Running Point delivers another shocking revelation. Despite her jitters from the previous day and her unwavering self-assurance, Isla resolutely strides into her office, disregarding Jackie’s efforts to halt her progress. However, she finds an unexpected sight upon entering – Cam, fresh from rehab, is seated behind the desk, welcoming a surprised Isla with a casual “Hey, what’s new, sis? I’m back.
As a film enthusiast, I must admit, I had my reservations about Isla’s presidency with Cam’s return. Despite his initial decision to appoint his sister as president, naming her over his brother, the narrative unfolds to reveal that Cam’s feelings of jealousy towards Isla’s success gradually surface. It seems he didn’t truly anticipate her ability to excel in the role when he passed the torch to her.
It comes to light that Cam, the person in question, was the one who leaked information about Marcus Winfield, the Waves’ top player, being traded to a talk show host. Moreover, he allegedly paid off his rehab center to get an early release. Given his jealousy towards the eldest Gordon sibling, Isla, he has previously tried to undermine her team progress. As for what he might do next and its potential impact on Isla’s position within the Waves, only time will tell. However, it’s reasonable to assume that whatever it is won’t be beneficial for Isla.
Based on the suspenseful finale, it’s highly likely that we’ll see a second season of “Running Point.” Yet, as of now, Netflix hasn’t given any official word about renewing the series. If a new season is green-lit, it probably won’t air before 2026 at the earliest.
Running Point is streaming on Netflix right now.
