Conan O’Brien Pulled No Punches With His Most Brutal Oscars 2025 Monologue Joke

It was no surprise that Conan O’Brien, the emcee of the 97th Academy Awards, wouldn’t shy away from taking risks – and his joke about Best Actress nominee Karla Sofía Gascón (from “Emilia Pérez”) certainly underscored this fact.

In reference to the Best Picture nominee “Anora”, O’Brien playfully pointed out, “Did you know ‘Anora’ uses the F-word 479 times? That surpasses the record set by Karla Sofía Gascón’s publicist by three times.” He then dramatically emphasized his remark by imitating Gascón’s publicist saying, “You tweeted WHAT?!” followed by a humorous dance move.

It’s no wonder O’Brien made such a daring joke, and the fact that Gascón was present when he said it only amplifies its audacity. However, one might ask, what exactly was the topic of O’Brien’s conversation? And what was Gascón sharing on X, the social media site once known as Twitter? Let’s jog your memory, but hold on tight.

Karla Sofía Gascón came under fire for several offensive social media posts ahead of the Academy Awards

When Karla Sofía Gascón was nominated for an Academy Award for “Emilia Pérez,” there was indeed reason to be thrilled; she became the first trans woman ever to receive a Best Actress nomination at the Oscars. However, the film faced criticism from the outset due to director Jacques Audiard’s lack of research on Mexico before shooting the movie, which he himself acknowledged. Additionally, Gascón’s personal views have raised concerns, to put it mildly.

In simpler terms, without going into excessive detail due to the highly offensive nature of some of Gascón’s social media posts, it is clear that she expressed many racist and hateful views which significantly tarnished her reputation. This is disappointing on several fronts because Gascón’s nomination represented a promising new phase for the Academy. However, the advancement made by her nomination was, in essence, negated by her deeply prejudiced views. It’s worth mentioning that when Zoe Saldaña won her award for best supporting actress, she chose not to thank Gascón.

With that said, “Emilia Pérez” is streaming on Netflix now.
