‘Anora’ Was Made on “Blood, Sweat and Tears” of Indie Artists, Says Sean Baker

2025 saw Anora take the lead at the Oscars, clinching the top prize and concluding the remarkable underdog journey of a modest $6 million independent film that dominated the event.

Filmmaker Sean Baker declared at the stage that it was an independently produced movie made with the hard work, perspiration, and emotional effort of talented independent artists.

Sean Baker, a filmmaker, stated from the podium that the movie was an independent production that was created using the blood, sweat, and tears of gifted indie artists.

Or,

In his speech on stage, Sean Baker called the movie “independently made” and said it was created with the hard work, sweat, and emotional investment of brilliant independent filmmakers.

As a gamer, I’ve just scored the ultimate victory, a triumph that echoes Baker’s innovative strategies. This maverick filmmaker is renowned for operating beyond the norm, sacrificing big budgets for unmatched creative freedom. Characters from society’s fringes have always been his focus, as seen in masterpieces like “Tangerine,” filmed on a shoestring budget with an iPhone, “The Florida Project,” about a resilient single mom living in a hotel, and “Red Rocket,” a tale of a worn-out porn star. Today, he’s made history by winning four Oscars for a single film – something no one has ever achieved before – taking home awards as a producer, director, original screenplay writer, and editor.

This success also marks a victory for distributor Neon, the independent company that was awarded Best Picture five years ago for “Parasite”, and for producer FilmNation, who supported the project and often works with Baker.

“We need more. This is proof,” producer Alex Coco said of indie movies.

Anora debuted its campaign from Cannes, winning the Palme D’or, and on Oscars night, Mikey Madison was awarded Best Actress for her performance as a sex worker who finds herself ensnared with the son of a Russian tycoon.

To those dreamers and aspiring filmmakers, don’t hesitate to share your own tales. Share the stories that inspire you,” said producer Samantha Quan from the stage.
