Two years since its debut on Disney+ Hotstar in 2023, the movie “Gulmohar” stands out as a powerful and heartfelt examination of the tensions between family members across generations. Starring Sharmila Tagore and Manoj Bajpayee, this film garnered significant acclaim, with the latter earning special recognition from the jury for his exceptional acting skills. The movie was honored as the Best Hindi Film at the National Film Awards in 2024. In a touching moment, Bajpayee revealed that his daughter had been deeply touched by the portrayal of Dadi, as it resonated with her personal experiences and reminded her of her own grandmother.
According to OTTPlay, during the FICCI Frames 2023 event, Manoj Bajpayee reminisced about a touching moment with his daughter after viewing Gulmohar. Typically, he avoids watching OTT films with her due to content concerns, but he made an exception for both Gulmohar and Harry Potter.
After the movie concluded, his daughter ran off to the restroom and wept so loudly that he could sense it. Upon returning with red-rimmed eyes, she initially declined to speak but eventually confessed that Sharmila Tagore’s character resembled her deceased grandmother (Nani), which made the entire experience profoundly touching and emotional for her.
Manoj also pointed out that Gulmohar struck a chord with viewers from various generations, labeling it as a film that finds common ground with every member of a family. He underscored the fact that skillfully produced family dramas have the power to stir emotions and forge significant connections, enabling spectators of all ages to identify with different characters and their experiences.
Featuring an impressive ensemble, the movie Gulmohar boasts stars like Sharmila Tagore, Manoj Bajpayee, Amol Palekar, and Suraj Sharma in crucial roles. The narrative revolves around the Batra family, who have long resided in their ancestral property named Gulmohar. Kusum Batra, portrayed by Tagore, chooses to sell the house and move to Pondicherry, leading the family to assemble for a farewell gathering.
In this story, Bajpayee plays the role of Arun Batra, who is Kusum’s adopted son, struggling to find his identity within the family. As they prepare to leave their home, feelings that had long been hidden and conflicts unresolved resurface, making their goodbye a mix of sweetness and sadness.
