As a fervent admirer, I eagerly awaited the premiere of the contentious Western production, “Rust,” at a film festival in 2024. The veil of mystery surrounding the heart-wrenching occurrences that unfolded on its set is set to be lifted by an upcoming documentary. Titled “Last Take: Rust and the Legacy of Halyna,” this documentary, soon to air on Hulu, delves into the poignant legacy of the late cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who tragically lost her life due to an accident involving a live round discharged from a prop revolver wielded by actor . The gripping first trailer for “Last Take: Rust and the Legacy of Halyna” has now been unveiled, and I invite you all to watch it below.
According to a report by Variety, the movie titled “Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna” is being produced by Nick Shumaker, Jessica Grimshaw, and Jennifer Sears for Anonymous Content. Additionally, Kate Barry, Jon Bardi, Julee Metz, and Will Cohen are producing it for Story Syndicate. Rachel Mason is both producing and directing the film. The release date for “Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna” on Hulu is set for March 11, 2025.
In the upcoming documentary, Mason intends to pay tribute to his friend and collaborator, Halyna Hutchins, who was a renowned cinematographer who sadly lost her life during the filming of “Rust.” The director aims to shed light on the circumstances surrounding her death on set, while showcasing Hutchins’ impressive work in movies such as “Darlin'” and “Archenemy.” Based on the trailer, it appears that this documentary is approached from a true crime perspective, featuring actual footage captured at the crime scene, along with firsthand accounts from those who were present during the tragic event.
Alec Baldwin Is Also Telling His Side of the Story
On October 21, 2021, a tragic incident involving the filming of the Western thriller “Rust” occurred, resulting in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. During a rehearsal, actor and producer Alec Baldwin was handling a prop gun that had not been properly checked by Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was responsible for props on set. The incident did not occur during the actual filming of the scene but during a rehearsal instead.
The investigation and subsequent trial primarily focused on Baldwin and Reed. Although Baldwin’s charges were dropped, Reed was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and is currently serving an 18-month prison sentence. Most recently, Baldwin has been seen in court filing a lawsuit alleging wrongful prosecution against the state of New Mexico.
The well-known figure, Baldwin, has ventured into the world of reality television, debuting the new TLC series titled “The Baldwins“. This program offers insights into Baldwin’s family following a trial. However, only two episodes (out of eight) have been aired so far, and the feedback has not been favorable. Although the show endeavors to reveal the intricacies of the family, it does so with an element of authenticity, critics on Rotten Tomatoes have expressed their disappointment towards the reality series, labeling it as a “sympathy gathering” and a peculiar, unsettling reality program.
Despite expressing a desire to disconnect from everything related to Rust, Baldwin will forever be linked to the unfortunate incident that led to Hutchins’ death. The event has indisputably left a lasting impression on his career, as he intends to make a gradual comeback to acting after the launch of his reality TV series.
