Proceed with caution if you haven’t watched the latest episode of ‘Severance’ on Apple TV+, as there are spoilers ahead!
In just a handful of minutes on screen during Season 1, Dichen Lachman‘s character in ‘Severance’ has likely sparked as many fan theories as many of its main characters. For example, there are theories about the purpose of MDR. The relationship between Gemma and Mark is still shrouded in mystery, but the episode titled “Chikhai Bardo” offers a wealth of hints through flashbacks and hidden clues, making it one of the most emotionally intense episodes expected for 2025 television lineup.

Christopher Walken subtly implied that the chronological inconsistencies in Burt’s timeline within ‘Severance’ might not be worth fretting over. However, fans remain skeptical and are still scrutinizing the details.
As a movie enthusiast, I’d rephrase it like this: In the storyline, flashbacks make it clear that Lumon has been deeply intertwined in Gemma and Mark’s lives, as well as the community, for much longer than initially suspected. Their seemingly ordinary meet-cute at the blood drive (a moment that, under normal circumstances, wouldn’t hint at a concealed past) became suspicious when I realized it was a Lumon-sponsored event, a fact underscored by the water drop logo that was also prominently displayed at the fertility clinic. This discovery cast a shadow over their initial encounter, raising questions about the true nature of Lumon’s presence in their lives.
– In a chat, Dichen Lachman pointed out the episode’s depiction of Lumon’s dominance within the community.
– She also shared a personal, speculative opinion about the potential link between Lumon, Gemma, and Mark.
They’ve undoubtedly been observing this particular couple for a considerable period of time. I suspect Lumon Corporation is involved in their selection and surveillance. It’s worth noting that Dr. Mauer, who happens to work at the fertility clinic, casually passes by. The implication here is that Lumon permeates everything, even Pip’s life, as he too is under their control. My hypothesis is that during Gemma’s visit to the fertility clinic, something unusual was detected in her blood test results, which could be connected to why Mark and Gemma were selected by Lumon Corporation.
In contrast to many actors on mystery-themed series who are required to maintain secrecy about key storylines and hesitant to express personal theories, Dichen Lachman stands out as a refreshing change of scene by openly sharing her thoughts regarding her character. I’m intrigued by the chilling notion that Lumon may secretly control every medical institution in the towns of Kier and Ganz, selectively choosing citizens who fit their objectives, and manipulating their lives to achieve those ends.
Despite Gemma’s blood being what initially intrigued Lumon executives, this doesn’t necessarily clarify why Mark appears to be the crucial employee who has his needs catered to, while Gemma is stuck in a metaphorical hell of existential torment. Mark’s significance likely stems from the reason Helena decided to sleep with him during the enigmatic ORTBO trip, but this factor doesn’t appear to connect directly to Gemma’s genetic makeup.

The Mysterious Easter Egg That Fans Might Have Missed
I must admit, the stunning revelation in Severance left me reeling. It turns out that severed employees aren’t confined to just one Innie; they can apparently have their minds split into at least six distinct and independent personas. This unsettling discovery isn’t exactly a comforting thought, especially since Dr. Mauer, as portrayed by Robby Benson in his chilling performance, appears to be determined to insert himself more deeply into Gemma’s existence, regardless of her fervent wish to reconnect with Mark.
As a movie buff, you might wonder how deep my love for cinema runs. A subtle clue could be hidden gems like Easter eggs, and I would’ve overlooked these if not for Dichen Lachman pointing them out.
It appears that the decorative icings on the Christmas tree in the testing area at Lumon resemble those used by Mark and Gemma on their own Christmas tree at home. I pointed this out to the writers, but they neither confirmed nor denied any connection.
One essential principle in the series ‘Severance’ goes like this: “Should you encounter an item or idea slightly misplaced once, expect to witness its reemergence in a wholly unexpected context later on.” This concept seems to extend even to holiday decorations such as Christmas tree tinsel.
Lachman pointed out that the tree in the “thank you card” room has a striking resemblance to the Christmas tree in Gemma and Mark’s house. While tinsel isn’t particularly unique, the way it’s hung from every branch of the tree definitely stands out.
To summarize, it appears that Dr. Mauer possesses pictures or videos of Gemma and Mark’s past holiday decorations, which could have been obtained in an innocent manner. However, the most concerning possibility is that he manipulated information from Gemma for use in subtly tormenting her Innie (inner self), or that he was already monitoring the couple and managed to obtain some of their Christmas trimmings from that particular year. I’d rather not contemplate the latter scenario.

What Dichen Lachman Thinks About Mark Saying He Identified Gemma’s Dead Body
One perplexing aspect of Mark and Gemma’s failed relationship is the assumption that Mark’s feelings towards Gemma’s situation were influenced by the fact that he had to identify her body following the mysterious car accident. It seems illogical that someone who had seen his wife’s lifeless body wouldn’t have a clear understanding of it, doesn’t it?
Hold on a minute. Lachman shares my belief that if Mark thought he saw Gemma’s corpse, it might have been influenced by something causing her to seem lifeless and motionless, as the actress herself phrased it: “If she appeared dead, it was likely due to some influence.
In my opinion, they may have administered a Shakespearean-like concoction to her, which Lumon likely produces as salves, ointments, and other similar substances. This could potentially be a substance that temporarily halts both the heartbeat and breathing, allowing them to convincingly simulate her death. . . . If Mark witnessed Gemma’s body reduced to ashes, he might genuinely believe Devon’s claim, since the remains wouldn’t have resembled Gemma. Instead, he would have seen a charred corpse. This is my theory.
Is it possible to invite Dichen Lachman for a discussion on various theories related to the show “Severance”? She might not be speaking on behalf of the writers and other creatives, but her unique insights would surely captivate fans who are eager for more than just carefully crafted comments from John Turturro and Adam Scott.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I can’t wait to catch each new installment of “Severance” on Apple TV+, airing every Friday. While it’s uncertain whether all the mysteries will be unveiled before Season 2 concludes, if by some luck they do, you can count on me being the first in line to pen a heartfelt thank-you note!
