Tate McRae Earns First U.S. No. 1 Album With ‘So Close to What’

On Sunday, Tate McRae achieved the top spot on the Billboard 200 chart, marking her debut as a number one album artist in the United States.

The twenty-one-year-old singer from Canada recently put out her third studio album titled “So Close to What” on February 21st. This album includes the singles “Revolving Door,” “It’s OK I’m OK,” and “Sports Car.” Last week, McRae sang “Sports Car” as well as another track from the album, “Dear God,” on Saturday Night Live.

The album titled “So Close to What” achieved 177,000 equivalent album units, marking the largest debut week for a studio album by a female artist since Sabrina Carpenter’s album “Short N’ Sweet,” as reported by Billboard.

Last month, McRae attracted hordes of supporters to the Kia Forum for a concert marking the release of his new album. The show, held in the parking lot of the Inglewood stadium, was jam-packed with activities such as photo sessions, fashion displays, food vendors, and booths offering free merchandise from American Express, Adidas, and Neutrogena – these last three companies being event sponsors.

Enthusiasts, sporting outfits reminiscent of McRae, petitioned for the opportunity to buy $8 tickets via Ticketmaster. All ticket proceeds are being given to FireAid to assist with Los Angeles wildfire recovery initiatives. The event was additionally broadcast on TikTok for those unable to attend in person.

McRae played various tracks from the album “So Close to What” at the fan gathering, some of which were debut performances, including “Dear God,” “bloodonmyhands,” and “Revolving Door.” The artist mentioned that the album’s central theme revolves around falling in love once more, a hint possibly alluding to her relationship with rapper The Kid LAROI, who is also part of the album.

The performer is getting ready to embark on a 82-show “Miss Possessive” tour, starting with a concert in Mexico City on March 18th. Along the way, she will visit cities like São Paulo, London, Amsterdam, Prague, and New York, wrapping up at L.A.’s Kia Forum in November.
