Ranbir Kapoor’s Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani co-star Poorna Jagannathan admits feeling ‘underestimated’ after film: ‘There was just no…’

Actress Poorna Jagannathan, recognized for her performances in The Night Of and Never Have I Ever, has shared insights about her challenges in the Bollywood industry, focusing on her work in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013). Poorna, who entered Bollywood with the 2011 film Delhi Belly, described feelings of being undervalued and restricted, stating, “There simply weren’t roles suitable for me,” when considering her experiences in India.

In a chat with PTI, Poorna expressed that even though Delhi Belly brought her success, she encountered difficulties in finding substantial roles within the Hindi film industry afterwards. She stated, “I worked on Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, but I felt undervalued and there simply wasn’t a role for me.” The actress elaborated that at the time, ageism was prevalent within the industry, making it challenging for her to secure meaningful roles.

Back in my days, breaking into Bollywood at the ripe age of 40 with a child by my side, I was often overlooked and undervalued. Filmmakers struggled to find suitable roles for me or even consider casting me at all. It’s inspiring to see ladies like Priyanka, Deepika, and others redefining what it means to be a woman in her forties now, but alas, that wasn’t the narrative when I was trying to make my mark. I yearned for more chances, but they seemed elusive.

Adding to my struggles was the language barrier – my Hindi wasn’t as fluent as it needed to be to truly thrive in this industry. The role of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani actress felt like a dream I could barely grasp.

Poorna mused over the transformation that the entertainment industry has undergone through the years. With the advent of streaming services, a wider variety of narratives and characters have come to light, providing actresses at every stage of life a platform to express themselves. She observed that the surge in popularity of these platforms has significantly influenced who gets to share stories today. This shift in the industry is particularly beneficial for women in their forties, as it presents them with opportunities that were scarce during Poorna’s time in Bollywood.

Despite facing challenges securing roles in Bollywood, Poorna’s acting career thrived in Hollywood. She garnered praise for her performance in “The Night Of” and subsequently appeared on popular TV series such as “The Blacklist”, “Better Call Saul”, “Ramy”, and “Never Have I Ever”.

At present, Poorna is engaged in a novel undertaking titled “Deli Boys,” a witty and somewhat ominous series revolving around two siblings who unexpectedly find themselves in charge of their father’s illicit business. The show’s humor bears a resemblance to Delhi Belly, a similarity that Poorna finds resonates with her unique comedic sensibilities.
