In its initial seven shows on Broadway, the play Othello, featuring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, generated an impressive earnings of $2.6 million.
The Ethel Barrymore Theatre’s production smashed numerous sales records over a span of nine shows, outperforming both plays and musicals by over a million dollars. This impressive feat was bolstered by an astonishing average ticket price of $361.90. Last week on Broadway, the highest average ticket price was for The Outsiders, coming in at just $155.
The show at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre earned more than a million dollars more than any other play or musical it competed against over nine performances. It had an average ticket price of $361.90, while last week’s highest-priced Broadway show was The Outsiders, priced at only $155.
Last week, earnings from performances of “Othello” surpassed those of “Wicked”, securing its position as the highest-grossing Broadway show. This triumph occurred despite “Wicked” having held the top spot for a considerable period, largely due to the boost it received from its movie adaptation.
The play, directed by Kenny Leon and produced by Brian Moreland, is set to open March 23.
Multiple other shows are preparing for their debut in the upcoming spring season, including “Purpose,” a new political family drama written by Tony Award-winning writer Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and directed by Phylicia Rashad, who also stars LaTanya Richardson Jackson. The show was fully booked during its initial seven performances at the Hayes Theater last week, earning $300,892 in ticket sales. The play is slated to make its official premiere on March 17th.
For the inaugural week, the Buena Vista Social Club graced the Schoenfeld Theater with seven shows and amassed a total of $758,261 in ticket sales. Although attendance dipped slightly by 8%, the theater was still nearly full during its initial three performances. The musical is scheduled to officially debut on March 19th.
Among the high-earning productions this week were “Wicked,” which made $2.4 million, followed by “Hamilton” with $1.55 million, “The Lion King” with $1.52 million, and “The Outsiders” earning $1.28 million.
