For more than ten years, Vin Diesel has lent his voice to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Groot character, even delivering the iconic line in various languages. Since the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 about two years ago, we haven’t received any official updates on whether or when King Groot will return in future Marvel films. However, Vin Diesel hinted at something different during a recent discussion about his ongoing projects.
Diesel shared in a recent Instagram post that he has a lot of irons in the proverbial fire, including Fast 11 (a.k.a. Fast X Part 2), the Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots movie, Riddick: Furya and “directing the film about that infamous New York detective,” which sounds like his long-awaited Kojak movie. But on the Marvel front, here’s what the Fast & Furious star had to say:
Additionally, Disney is eager for their version of Planet X as well, often referred to as Marvel’s most hotly anticipated film, chuckles included. This upcoming movie will see the return of Groot to his native planet.
It’s interesting… Sometimes, even though Marvel Studios hasn’t officially announced it, there are whispers or speculations that certain MCU movies are under development. Given my focus on superhero movie news, I have a good grasp of what’s definitely in production and what could potentially be in the future. However, I haven’t come across any information suggesting a Groot film is being developed yet.
In the comics, it’s accurate that Groot originates from Planet X, which serves as the central hub for the Flora colossi, Groot’s species. Due to certain events in various stories, Groot was exiled from Planet X and spent his time wandering the cosmos until he encountered Rocket Raccoon. The initial Guardians of the Galaxy film identified Groot’s homeworld as Planet X, but neither this section of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), including the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (which can be streamed with a Disney+ subscription), has explored the backstory of either the original Groot or his descendants.
It’s intriguing to contemplate King Groot returning to Planet X in a movie, but I have my doubts about Marvel dedicating an entire film solely to him. Given the circumstances, it seems more likely that this storyline would be part of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4, although there haven’t been any confirmations yet. If it does happen, James Gunn probably won’t be involved in writing or directing since he’s now a key figure at DC Studios.
It’s important to mention that as of now, only Peter Quill (Star-Lord) has been confirmed to reappear in the MCU according to the end credits scene of GOTG 3. However, it’s possible that other Guardians of the Galaxy members might appear in upcoming films like Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars. For now, I’m choosing not to get too excited about Groot making a comeback, especially a solo movie, until Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, provides more information on the subject.
For Groot in the MCU, we’ll simply need to be patient and find out what the future has planned. Meanwhile, aside from the previously mentioned projects, Vin Diesel hinted on social media about potential returns as Kaulder from “The Last Witch Hunter” and Xander Cage from the “xXx” movie franchise.
