One captivating feature of the original “Daredevil” series (now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe) was the investigative journalism used to expose Wilson Fisk (portrayed by Vincent D’Onofrio). During the first season, the Kingpin’s enigma was gradually unraveled, revealing evidence that would keep him imprisoned for a considerable period. Now, “Daredevil: Born Again” has garnered similar praise. The narrative progresses, but through a fresh perspective – a different camera angle. In this reboot series, Genneya Walton portrays BB Urich, a video journalist who hosts a street-style program called “The BB Report.” However, who is this new character? She’s the niece of the original Daredevil’s top reporter.
It’s no secret to hardcore Marvel enthusiasts that BB is the niece of Ben Urich, played by Vondie Curtis-Hall, a fact hinted at when she used his last name. The reason Curtis-Hall departed from “Daredevil” was due to the tragic and violent death of Urich at the hands of Fisk in the final episodes of the first season, an event designed to jolt viewers. Fast forward a decade, and his niece is stepping into his shoes. In the original series, Karen Page (played by Deborah Ann Woll) followed in Urich’s footsteps, even inheriting his office at The New York Bulletin. However, BB Urich has her own path to tread, and while she proudly bears her uncle’s name, she has her unique methods for uncovering the truth.
Ben Urich is vital to the Daredevil mythos
Some might question why “Daredevil: Born Again” includes BB Urich in its storyline, but the reality is that Ben Urich has always been a crucial figure in the Man Without Fear’s saga. Originally a journalist for The Daily Bugle, Urich made his debut in Daredevil (Vol. 1) #153 during the late ’70s, digging into the life of Wilson Fisk, whom he suspected was New York’s notorious Kingpin. As it turned out, Urich was spot on with his suspicions. In fact, he often turns out to be correct more than not. Throughout the years, Urich revealed the identities of Daredevil and Spider-Man and wrote extensive articles exposing the criminal activities of both Wilson Fisk and Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin.
For years, BB Urich has loyally guarded Matt Murdock’s secret and has collaborated with him in solving numerous criminal plots throughout Hell’s Kitchen. Moreover, this character has also appeared in various Spider-Man comic book series. To add complexity to the storyline, her nephew, Phil Ulrich, assumed roles as both the Green Goblin and Hobgoblin over time. However, “Daredevil: Born Again” does not confirm the existence of Phil; instead, BB Urich appears to serve more as a stand-in for her uncle than an aspiring supervillain. As we await their encounter, we can only speculate that she will side with Daredevil against Fisk, similar to how her uncle once did.
