Without a doubt, among Marvel enthusiasts, the much-awaited films on everyone’s radar are Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, serving as the climax for The Multiverse Saga similar to how Infinity War and Endgame concluded The Infinity Saga. Initially, it was expected that Jonathan Majors’ character, King the Conqueror, would be the primary antagonist in this phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, that role has been reassigned to Doctor Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. A recent rumor suggests that the driving force behind Doctor Doom’s actions in the next two Avengers films may stem from a grudge against one of the Kang variants.
As per data from The Cosmic Circus, Downey’s Doom is planning to halt the invasions that could potentially shatter the Marvel multiverse. This originates from the occurrences in the Loki series (you can catch up on it with your Disney+ subscription), where infinite timelines emerged after the demise of He Who Remains. By the end of Season 2, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki had revived these decaying timelines and pledged to preserve their existence within the multiverse at the End of Time.

In my own words, being part of shaping Doctor Doom for the upcoming Avengers films has been quite an intense journey. However, hearing the Russos’ teases have me buzzing with excitement!
In a fun twist, it’s announced that Robert Downey Jr. is coming back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this time as Doctor Doom. Meanwhile, Anthony Mackie, our beloved Captain America, shared a chuckle-inducing reaction about squaring off against this new villain.
According to the gossip, Doctor Doom is reportedly upset with He Who Remains for focusing on the Sacred Timeline and supposedly suppressing other realities. With the multiverse under threat again, Doctor Doom is prepared to go to any lengths to safeguard his universe, even if it leads to the destruction of all others. In essence, he yearns to seize control over his timeline and gain independence. From his perspective and that of his supporters, he’s seen as a hero in this narrative.
It’s yet unknown which universe Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom originates from, but since he is predominantly known as the Fantastic Four’s sworn enemy in the comics, it’s likely that the universe depicted in The Fantastic Four: First Steps is a strong candidate. However, this isn’t the only reality where such a relentless objective is pursued. Numerous heroes will be battling to safeguard their own dimensions, disregarding the fates of others.
The article also indicates that Loki serves as a crucial element in both “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”. The struggle against Doomsday appears to revolve around who can reach Loki first. It’s yet unknown how the absence of Kang will be explained since the mid-credits scene from “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” hinted at the Council of Kangs planning an invasion of Earth-616. Last summer, there was a rumor suggesting that the Time Variance Authority might have eliminated all the Kang variants, but it seems unlikely to me that Doom would eradicate them all given his ongoing feud with He Who Remains.
The movie titled “Avengers: Doomsday” premieres in cinemas on May 1, 2026, and is followed by “Avengers: Secret Wars” on May 7, 2027. Fingers crossed we’ll find out more about Doctor Doom’s intentions this year. Additionally, I’m hoping he may unexpectedly appear in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” set to be released as part of the 2025 film lineup on July 25.
