Outlander Season 8 Is A Ways Off, But The Showrunner’s ‘Traditional Feels’ Comment About The Final Episodes Is Already Making Me Nervous

Fans worldwide have been aware for quite a while that “Outlander” Season 8 would mark the end of the series. Although Season 7 has concluded its broadcast on the 2025 TV lineup, the upcoming prequel titled “Outlander: Blood of My Blood” is set to air before we find out how the love story of Claire and Jamie concludes. As we patiently wait, I must confess that I’m already quite anxious about the final season, given the comments made by the showrunner not too long ago.

What Outlander’s Showrunner Said About Season 8 And Why It Has Me Nervous

For those who haven’t been following all the latest news about Outlander, you should know that filming for Season 8 (or as we now call it, the last episodes) wrapped up in late September 2024. Since then, there have been many updates. For instance, Sam Heughan has expressed his anticipation of missing the friendship on set. Meanwhile, Caitríona Balfe mentioned in summer 2023 that they both became emotional when realizing how near the end was. Furthermore, the cast and crew had a moving final read-through, which they described as perfect but emotionally charged.

Every “Outlander” enthusiast can’t help but feel a mix of apprehension and excitement about the conclusion of one of the most captivating historical romantic dramas ever produced for television, but now I have an additional cause for concern. When asked about the final season, showrunner Matthew B. Roberts shared this with TV Insider:

I believe these characters and their tales resonate deeply with viewers, so we meticulously designed Season 8 to evoke those emotions. Our aim was to ensure that your journey through Season 8 delivers the classic emotional impact that Outlander is known for.

Sighhhhhhh. OK, everybody hold on while I collect myself.

Alright. Here we go…

As a devoted viewer myself, I must admit that Roberts purposefully kept his cards close to his chest throughout the series, leaving us eager fans guessing and speculating. This approach is entirely justified, given the rich tapestry of romantic entanglements, intense drama, exhilarating action scenes, and, of course, the unique blend of 18th-century time travel that this show has masterfully woven together over the seasons. The final episode promises to evoke a kaleidoscope of emotions, leaving us with memories that will linger long after the credits roll.

Initially, upon reading his words, all that sprang to my mind in connection with “the traditional feel of Outlander” was a sense of trauma. Unfortunately, that’s the association that came to me.

As a devoted fan, I must admit I’m not expecting the upcoming season of this series to portray our cherished characters in an idyllic pastoral setting, frolicking with butterflies and kittens amidst rainbow-filled meadows. After all, the American Revolution is far from over! I understand that each character will undoubtedly encounter trials and tribulations. What I yearn for is a balance between hardship and hope, where the struggles they face are both engaging and not excessively distressing to watch.

I can’t forget the moment when I stumbled upon the final two episodes from the first season of the romantic series “Outlander”. To this day, I haven’t witnessed anything as heart-wrenching on television. Although Season 1, Episode 16 is undeniably one of the greatest episodes in the show, it left me so unsettled that I couldn’t sleep for hours afterward; I even resorted to watching cartoons to help calm my thoughts and make some sense of what I had experienced.

Essentially, I’m expressing that I won’t handle well if Season 8 even slightly resembles that event, and having a sprinkle of kittens and rainbows in the final season of our beloved series would make it all more bearable for us.
