The termination of the drama series by Netflix following just two seasons wasn’t the anticipated news for its fans. Of all people, creator Alexi Hawley seems to be feeling the cancellation most deeply, as he expressed his sorrow over the show’s end in a lengthy Instagram post. Social media has been inundated with angry reactions from disappointed fans who are once again upset about an early ending for their beloved spy series. However, Hawley’s post offers a poignant glimpse into the heartache of having poured so much effort into a project only to see it terminated at its zenith.
Originally, we pitched our pilot to USA Network, but it didn’t succeed there. However, an unusual set of circumstances occurred, and everything fell into place miraculously. Doug Liman and Noah Centineo came on board, and the project was resurrected at Netflix. Writing the second script felt smoother than the first one, which is a positive indication that the show is effective and engaging.
Following the challenging production of Season 1 amidst the pandemic, Hawley went on to explain how Season 2 took shape, even though it wasn’t initially certain. He elaborated on the shared conviction that the series was valuable enough to endure the hardships we faced during its creation, and this belief kept us pushing forward. Hawley then continued:
Season 1 ended on a bold note, leaving us wondering if Season 2 would materialize. Initially, there were concerns about the completion rate, but those were eventually addressed. Excitement turned into reality as we received the green light, reducing eight episodes to six. However, this was followed by the writers’ and SAG strike, making production a race against time. From being chaotic in Season 1 to surprisingly calm in Season 2, filming took place in Vancouver. Then, our journey led us to Korea… Along the way, we formed a unique bond, which feels like a series and a movie combined. If it isn’t, we gave our all during production. For those who haven’t seen it yet, I urge you to dive in. I swear by God, you’ll find the ride both thrilling and entertaining. In an era where many shows feel like assignments, ‘The Recruit’ offers high stakes, humor, and intense action that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
With gratitude, Hawley expressed his appreciation to the team for pouring their best efforts into this unique production. He concluded by saying, “I’ve grown as a person from our time together.
‘The Recruit’ Was Building Its World Piece by Piece
Similar to numerous other shows, The Recruit didn’t make an immediate impact when Season 1 premiered on Netflix. However, its impressive comeback in Season 2 and growing audience base made it unexpected for fans when the news of its cancellation was announced today by Colton Dunn, one of the series’ main actors who portrayed CIA agent Lester Kitchens. In a recent social media post, Dunn expressed:
I regret to inform you that ‘The Recruit’ has been cancelled. It’s really disappointing. However, I will post some pictures and fun moments on Instagram. I just wanted to let you know myself. Thank you for watching. Now, I am ready for your TV story! Feel free to hire me!
Although Season 2 significantly boosted its critical acclaim on Rotten Tomatoes, jumping from a 68% rating in Season 1 to a 92% for Season 2, it failed to meet Netflix’s stringent audience expectations. A significant drop of more than two million viewers from the initial episodes to later ones seemed to be the decisive factor, and even if a show is highly praised, it can’t survive without the viewership. The first two seasons of The Recruit remain accessible for streaming on Netflix.
