Similar to numerous movies in the past, Thunderbolts might have its major twist unveiled prematurely due to a Funko Pop! figure. The much-anticipated film, being the final installment of Marvel’s Phase Five, has kept under wraps the unmasking of its primary antagonist: The Sentry. Despite Lewis Pullman confirmed to portray The Sentry in Thunderbolts, the promotion for the movie has been subtle, using terms like ‘Bob’ instead or showing him from behind or backlit to hide his super suit before it hits theaters on May 2, 2025.
It’s not unprecedented for a movie’s toy collection to spoil significant plot twists that were intended to remain secret in the film. For instance, the Funko line of “Captain America: Brave New World” showcased Tim Blake Nelson’s The Leader in an original design before changes during reshoots. Marvel Studios has managed to stay one step ahead of leaks in some cases, such as the Iron Man 3 Lego set that hinted at the Mandarin twist by depicting a battle between Iron Man and the Mandarin in an armored car. However, with The Sentry being rumored to be the villain in Thunderbolts, it’s puzzling why Marvel Studios has not disclosed his appearance before a toy line did so.
Why is Marvel Hiding The Sentry in the ‘Thunderbolts*’ Marketing?
In contrast to how Marvel Studios showcased Red Hulk in “Captain America: Brave New World,” where he was the main focus of marketing despite only appearing in the third act, the upcoming film “Thunderbolts” is taking a different approach. Instead of revealing who the villain is to the general public, it’s keeping that information hidden, similar to how they handled The Leader. The trailers and posters for “Thunderbolts” emphasize the diverse ensemble cast and the intriguing dynamics that arise when these characters are brought together, rather than focusing on the villain. From a poster reminiscent of a Wheaties box to a trailer showcasing the creative team’s talents from A24, “Thunderbolts” is positioning itself as a unique Marvel movie by not emphasizing the villain in its marketing strategy.
It’s quite logical because The Sentry isn’t a character with the flashy appearance of Red Hulk or the immediate familiarity of Green Goblin. Most people might encounter The Sentry for the first time in movies, even those who collect Funko Pop! figures will probably recognize him only if they are already aware that The Sentry is making an appearance, as not everyone may be well-versed with this character.
